  • Typical Ratios: Approximately 1:3–4
  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Call: Not required
  • Float Expectations: May float to telemetry or medical-surgical units when staffing needs require
  • Documentation: Epic electronic health record (EHR)
  • Unit Focus: Cardiac monitoring, progressive care, telemetry, and stepdown nursing

PCU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year of recent PCU, stepdown, progressive care, or comparable intermediate-care nursing experience
  • Current Registered Nurse (RN) license; compact license must be active and in hand at submission when applicable
  • Current BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications
  • Recent Epic experience is required
  • Demonstrated ability to manage and titrate cardiac and vasoactive drips
  • Strong cardiac telemetry interpretation and dysrhythmia-management skills
  • Ability to care for patients with diagnoses such as CHF, atrial fibrillation with rapid ventricular response, chest pain, post-MI conditions, and post-cardiac procedures
  • Comfort caring for patients with complex lines, drains, respiratory support, and other progressive-care needs
  • Previous charge nurse experience is preferred
  • Commitment to every-other-weekend scheduling and required holiday coverage

Progressive Care Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care for adult and geriatric patients in a PCU and stepdown setting
  • Continuously assess patients receiving cardiac monitoring and promptly recognize changes in condition
  • Manage and titrate cardiac and vasoactive infusions according to orders and established protocols
  • Interpret telemetry rhythms, respond to dysrhythmias, and initiate appropriate interventions
  • Care for patients before and after cardiac catheterization, cardiac angiography, cardiac surgery, and related procedures
  • Manage central lines, PICC lines, chest tubes, surgical drains, feeding tubes, urinary catheters, and peripheral IV access
  • Support patients requiring oxygen therapy, high-flow nasal cannula, BiPAP/CPAP, and other non-invasive airway-management interventions
  • Administer blood products and medications while maintaining strict safety and infection-control practices
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, rehabilitation, rapid response teams, and other members of the care team
  • Document assessments, interventions, and patient responses accurately in Epic
  • Float to telemetry or medical-surgical units when needed to support safe staffing and continuity of care
