• Most states require licensure
• Certification from American Board of Radiology (ABR) or American Board of Medical Physics (ABMP)

The primary responsibility of the Medical Physicist is to ensure the safe, accurate, and effective delivery of radiation in the diagnosis and treatment of cancerous growths.

• Collaborate with radiation oncologists, dosimetrists, and radiation therapists to develop and review patient treatment plans.
• Verify the accuracy of radiation dose calculations and treatment parameters prior to patient treatment.
• Perform calibration, quality assurance, and routine testing of linear accelerators, CT simulators, and other radiotherapy equipment.
• Conduct patient-specific quality assurance for advanced treatment techniques, including IMRT, VMAT, SBRT, and SRS.
• Oversee the commissioning and acceptance testing of new treatment equipment, software, and procedures.
• Provide physics support for brachytherapy procedures, including source calibration and treatment plan verification.
• Assure compliance with federal, state, and local radiation safety regulations, accreditation, standards, and accepted professional guidelines.
• Serve as a technical resource and provide education to clinical staff on radiation physics, equipment operation, and safety practices.
• Promote and maintain a safe work environment for patients, staff, and the public, incorporating national patient safety initiatives and radiation protection principles.
• Maintain accurate records of equipment performance, quality assurance results, and patient treatment verification.
