Unit Information
The Float Pool position will encompass floating within the scope of practice across various departments within the hospital, including PCU, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical, and Emergency Department Holding. Travelers may also float to nearby locations to provide care within their scope.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of experience required.
- First-time travelers are welcomed if they possess strong experience in PCU/Telemetry and previous float pool experience.
Patient Types & Common Diagnoses
Most common assignments will be in the ED Holding area, although floating to inpatient PCU areas is expected. Common patient diagnoses include:
- Neuro, Trauma, Surgical, Medical cases
- Respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders
- General medical and surgical cases, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, orthopedic conditions, strokes
- Cardiac Stepdown and Cardiac Short Stay (post-operative CABG/TAVRs), STEMIs, femoral-popliteal bypasses, pacemaker placements, ablations, chest pain observation, post-catheterization care
Patient Ratios
- PCU: 1:4
- Medical-Surgical: 1:5-6
Licensing and Certifications Required
Required Skills
- IV Medication Titration
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- BIPAP management
- Ostomy care, management of general drains, tracheostomies, chest tubes, lumbar drains
- Experience with TR Bands (preferred)
- EPIC electronic medical record experience
Support Within the Department
Support staff includes:
- CNA support
- Charge RN without patient assignment
- Hospitalists available 24/7
- Respiratory Therapy teams available 24/7
- Access to cardiac and specialty physicians on call 24/7
Technology & Equipment
- Electronic Medical Record: EPIC (required)
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication dispensing: Pyxis
Floating Information
Floating responsibilities may include PCU, Telemetry, Medical-Surgical units, and ER Holding. Travel to nearby locations for patient care may be required, with advance notification provided if this occurs.
Orientation
- 1 day of general hospital orientation
- 1 day of unit-specific orientation (12 hours) on the PCU unit
- Traveler Telemetry Competency required
Scheduling & Shift Details
- Weekend rotations are typically every other week, with occasional back-to-back weekends.
- Holidays and requested time off (RTO) for up to 5 days are permissible.
- Shifts will occur from 0700-1930 or 1900-0730.
- Scheduling will be done in 3-week increments, with schedules provided 7-10 days prior to the start date.
- No self-scheduling or guaranteed patterned schedules are available.

- Scrub colors: Any professional solid color.
- Free parking available in designated areas.
- Daily tasks include documenting hourly rounding, filling out whiteboards, and providing bedside report.
- Saline flushes are considered medications and should not be left at the bedside or in pockets.
