Thrive Staffing is seeking a travel nurse RN ICU - Intensive Care Unit for a travel nursing job in Tacoma, Washington.

ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

This position involves floating within multiple locations, including all ICUs, PCU/CCUs, and ED holding units. Applicants must have a minimum of one year of ICU experience. First-time travelers with strong ICU skills and previous float pool experience are welcome to apply.

Patient Types

Travelers will be expected to care for the following patient populations:

  • COVID-19 Patients
  • Neuro, Trauma, Medical, Surgical patients
  • Sepsis, pneumonia, DKA, DTs, multi-system failure, spinal injuries
  • Pre/post catheterization patients (radial approach)
  • General surgery patients
  • Respiratory compromise, CHF, COPD
  • Gunshot wounds (GSW), stabbings, motor vehicle accidents (MVA)
  • Strokes, traumatic brain injuries (TBI), various back surgeries
  • CVICU patients post-operatively (including CABG, TAVR, AAA repair)

Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1 nurse to 2 patients
  • PCU/ACC/CCU: 1 nurse to 4 patients
  • ER Holding: Ratio based on patient level of care

Certifications Required

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Skills

  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Ventilator and BiPAP management
  • Invasive line management
  • Ostomy care, general drains, tracheostomy care
  • Chest tubes and lumbar drains management
  • IV medication titration

Support on the Unit

Support will be provided by:

  • Charge Nurse
  • Hospitalist, Respiratory Therapist, and Intensivist – available 24/7
  • Cardiologist on call 24/7 for specific units

Charting System

Experience with the Epic charting system is required.

Scheduling

The schedule is typically organized three weeks in advance, with patterns determined by management. Expectations include:

  • Every other weekend shifts
  • Occasional back-to-back weekend shifts (rare)
  • No self-scheduling or guarantee of a consistent schedule
  • Time off requires manager approval for any requests exceeding five days

Floating Requirements

Travelers may be required to float to:

  • Neuro/Trauma/Medical/Cardiac ICU
  • CCU (Cardiac Step Down)
  • PCU/ACC
  • ED Holding
  • Med/Surg Units
  • Any open surge areas for the above units

Travelers may also float to nearby locations as needed, with advance notice provided.

Orientation

  • 1 day of general hospital orientation
  • 1 day of unit orientation (12 hours) on the ICU unit
  • 1 day (12 hours) on similar units

Additional Requirements

  • Telemetry competency must be completed and passed prior to starting.
  • Professional scrubs of any color are permitted.
  • Parking is free within designated areas.
  • Documentation of hourly rounding and bedside report is mandatory.

Medication Management

  • Saline flushes are considered medication and should not be left at the bedside or in scrubs.
  • Medications should not be left

Thrive Staffing Job ID #19175501. Pay package is based on 12 hour shifts and 48.0 hours per week (subject to confirmation) with tax-free stipend amount to be determined.
