Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring a NE or compact license and prior stepdown or telemetry experience.

Details

  • Acute care setting in a Level 2 trauma hospital, Stepdown/PCU unit
  • 40-bed unit with average daily census of 24 and patient ratios of 1:4-5 days and nights
  • Patient population includes cardiac med/surg, dialysis, cancer, vascular, sepsis, respiratory, stroke, post-stent, post-pacer, and renal failure patients
  • RNs titrate drips including Heparin, Nitro, Dopamine, Cardizem, Amiodarone, and insulin
  • Charge nurse present on each shift and takes an assignment
  • Patient care techs on unit at a 1:12 ratio
  • High flow respiratory equipment used, with RNs troubleshooting as needed
  • RNs read and interpret their own telemetry strips
  • EPIC EMR used
  • 12-hour night shifts, 0630-1830 and 1830-0630
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required to MedSurg or ICU to cover PCU-acuity patients
  • Minimum of 2 holidays required within the contract period

Requirements

  • Active RN license (NE or Compact) required, pending licenses not accepted
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience required
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required, active and in hand
  • Competency in arterial lines required
  • Driver's license required at submission to confirm residency location
  • Two professional references required: one supervisor from within the last 12 months worked and one peer or supervisor from within the last 3 years worked, including dates of employment and rehire eligibility

  • Provide direct patient care for a diverse stepdown/PCU population, including cardiac, renal, respiratory, and post-procedural patients
  • Utilize equipment such as overhead and portable lifts, vein finders, and bladder scanners
  • Focus on patient experience, responsiveness, and clear medication communication
  • Serves a culturally diverse patient population, including Hispanic and Somalian communities
  • Success on this unit requires flexibility, adaptability, strong communication, and teamwork
  • Navy blue scrub color required
  • One day of unit-specific orientation provided
  • Artificial nails are prohibited in all patient care areas; refusal to comply will result in contract termination
  • Must pass an open-book, pass/fail skills exam during orientation with a required 90% score
  • Must reside at least 50 miles from the facility, verified via driver's license
  • Candidates may not have been directly employed (full time, part time, or PRN) by any CommonSpirit-affiliated facility, including CHI or Dignity, within the past year
  • RTO must be requested upfront and is limited to 7 or fewer days per 13-week contract; additional RTO will not be approved after submission
