Float Pool Registered Nurse (RN)
Unit Information
This position is a Float Pool role, requiring the ability to float to various units within the hospital, including PCU, Telemetry, MedSurg, and ED Holding. The traveler may also float to another location within the region if necessary.
Experience Requirements
- Minimum of 1 year of clinical experience required.
- First-time travelers are welcome, provided they have strong experience in PCU/Tele and previous float pool experience.
Patient Types and Common Diagnoses
The primary unit will be ED Holding, where the traveler is expected to spend most of their contract time. Additional floating may occur in the inpatient PCU area. The patient population includes:
- Neuro, Trauma, Surgical, Medical, and other general medical diagnoses.
- Respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and strokes.
- CCU patient types post-procedures, including CABG, TAVR, STEMIs, and cardiac observation.
Patient Ratios
- PCU: 1 RN to 4 patients
- MedSurg: 1 RN to 5-6 patients
Licenses and Certifications
- BLS (Basic Life Support)
- ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
- NIHSS (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale)
Required Skills
- IV Medication Titration
- Cardiac rhythm interpretation
- BIPAP management
- Ostomy care, general drainage management, tracheostomy care, chest tube management, lumbar drains, and TR Bands (preferred)
- Proficient in using the EPIC EMR system
Departmental Support
Support staff includes:
- CNA (Certified Nursing Assistant)
- Charge RN without patient assignment
- Hospitalist available 24/7
- Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
- Cardiac and specialty physicians on call 24/7
Technology and Equipment
- Electronic Medical Record: EPIC (required)
- IV Pump: Alaris
- Medication Dispensing: Pyxis
Floating Information
The position will require floating to various units including PCU, Telemetry, MedSurg, and ED Holding. Additionally, floating to another location within the region may occur as needed.
Orientation
- 1-day general hospital orientation
- 1-day unit orientation on the PCU unit (12 hours)
- Telemetry Competency required for travelers
Scheduling Details
- Weekend rotation: every other weekend, with potential for back-to-back weekends (rare)
- Right to Take Off (RTO): Approval up to 5 days
- Shift times: 0700-1930 or 1900-0730
- Schedule cycles: Created in 3-week increments with notifications given 7-10 days prior
- No self-scheduling or guarantee of a patterned schedule
Additional Notes
- Scrub Color: Any solid color, professional
- Parking is free in the designated garage.
- Required tasks include filling out whiteboards, documenting hourly rounding, and providing bedside reports.
- Medication safety practices must be adhered to, including verification processes and documentation of pain assessment before and after medication administration.
- Breaks are mandatory for all staff.
