Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Description

We are seeking a skilled and dedicated Registered Nurse (RN) for a float pool position supporting various units including ICU, PCU, Medical, Surgical, and Inpatient Rehabilitation. This role requires flexibility and resourcefulness as the nurse will be assigned to multiple patient care areas based on department needs.

Unit Information

  • MSICU: 40 beds
  • CVICU: 10 beds (no specific CVICU experience needed)
  • PCU: 40 beds
  • 2R PCU Obs: 18 beds, can increase to 27 when at overflow capacity
  • CCU: 30 beds
  • Medical: 89 beds
  • Surgical: 55 beds
  • Flex Unit: 9 beds (combination of PCU and MS patients)
  • Inpatient Rehab: 47 beds
  • ED Holding: Patients awaiting bed assignments
  • COVID overflow

Minimum Experience Requirements

  • 2 years of ICU experience for ICU assignments.
  • 2 years of PCU experience for PCU assignments.
  • 2 years of acute care experience for Medical/Surgical assignments.

Patient Types and Common Diagnoses

The float pool RN will encounter a variety of patient types, including:

  • ICU: Patients with respiratory failure, GI bleeds, DKA, sepsis, post-operative complications, CVAs, ETOH withdrawal, and IV drug abuse.
  • PCU: Patients with respiratory compromise, sepsis, renal failure, bleeding disorders, CHF, COPD, pneumonia, and general medical/surgical cases.
  • Med-Surg: Includes a range of cases such as oncology, post-operative care, diabetes management, and COVID-related symptoms.
  • Rehabilitation: Patients requiring therapy for strokes, spinal cord injuries, TBIs, or multi-trauma recovery.

Role Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive nursing care as per established protocols and guidelines.
  • Be adaptable to float between various units based on patient care needs.
  • Assist in patient transport throughout multiple hospital departments.
  • Maintain effective communication with healthcare teams and provide patient education.

Required Licenses and Certifications

  • Valid nursing license.
  • ACLS, BLS, and NIHSS certifications required for ICU and PCU roles.
  • BLS and NIHSS for Med-Surg positions.

Skills Required

  • Strong cardiac rhythm interpretation skills.
  • Ventilator and invasive line management (ICU).
  • Ability to manage chest tubes, drains, and IV medication titrations (PCU).
  • Competency in IV administration, patient education, and communication.

Support and Team Structure

  • Technological support including RT, Hospitalist, and Intensivist teams available 24/7.
  • Unit tech-to-nurse ratios vary by department (1:14 in ICU, 1:10 in PCU, and 1:8-10 in Med-Surg).

Technology Used

  • Electronic Medical Record (EMR): EPIC
  • Infusion Pumps: Alaris
  • Medication Dispensing: Pyxis

Orientation

  • 2 days of hospital orientation including login access and training modules.
  • 1 day on assigned unit for specific orientation to procedures and protocols.
