Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Progressive Care Unit (PCU) position requiring strong vasoactive drip titration skills and NC or compact RN licensure.

Details

  • Progressive Care Unit (PCU) functioning similarly to an ICU stepdown
  • 20-bed unit with an average daily census of 18 patients
  • Patient population includes post rapid response team patients, respiratory distress, unstable hemodynamics, withdrawal, GI bleeds, and post-op GYN, GU, GI, thoracotomy, neuro, and ortho surgical patients
  • Also cares for pre/post OB patients with complications requiring Pitocin
  • Patient ages range from adolescent to geriatric
  • Target nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:3-4
  • Only one pressor drip per patient allowed on the unit; additional drips require ICU transfer
  • Manages drips including Cardizem, Nitro, Precedex, Cardene, Levophed, Dopamine, Dobutamine, and Neo
  • Uses bedside telemetry monitors with remote backup
  • Unit uses Pyxis and Epic systems
  • No ventilators on the unit, but BiPAP, A-lines, chest tubes, and tracheostomies are managed
  • 12-hour night shifts (18:45-7:15) on a 3x12 schedule
  • Every other weekend requirement
  • Floating required as needed to a sister ICCU unit
  • Schedule created by the nurse manager; no block scheduling available

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (pending license accepted at submission)
  • Minimum 2 years of relevant RN experience required
  • BLS, ACLS, and NIHSS certifications required
  • Required experience with arterial line management and titrating vasoactive and cardiac drips
  • Experience with PCU/DOU/IMC/Stepdown and telemetry care required
  • Skilled in interpretation and management of dysrhythmias
  • Experience with IV insulin protocols, heparin protocols, and IV therapy/phlebotomy
  • Experience with blood product administration, central line, peripheral line, and PICC line care/management
  • Experience managing chest tubes (Emerson/Pleur-evac), external CPAP/BIPAP, high flow nasal cannula, and nasal cannula
  • Skilled in non-invasive airway management and tracheostomy care/management
  • Experience with isolation precautions/PPE
  • Experience with IV starts, telemetry monitoring, and conscious sedation
  • Epic charting experience preferred

Additional Information

  • Monitor and respond to dysrhythmias using bedside telemetry with remote backup
  • Utilize rapid response/code teams as needed for patient care escalation
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty
  • Hospital orientation occurs during the first week; traveler must attend classes daily
  • Scrub colors limited to navy, white, or a combination of the two
  • Must work 2 of 3 major holidays
  • Up to 7 days of RTO may be auto-approved, excluding holidays; no RTO allowed during the first week of assignment
  • First-time travelers are welcome to apply
  • Local candidates within 50 miles accepted at a lower pay rate
  • Former Novant Health or New Hanover employees (PERM/PRN/EP) must wait 12 months before applying and disclose prior employment details for facility approval
  • Travel pairs allowed if placed on different units with separate schedules and independent transportation
  • 13-week minimum contract length, with longer contracts available
