Progressive Care Unit (PCU) Registered Nurse (RN) Travel Contract – Winston-Salem, NC
Travel Registered Nurse (RN) opportunity in Winston-Salem, North Carolina, caring for adult and geriatric patients with complex cardiopulmonary needs in a high-acuity Progressive Care Unit (PCU). Travel Nursing Job Details
- Position: Registered Nurse (RN) – Progressive Care Unit (PCU)
- Weekly Estimated Pay: $1,710–$1,800
- Location: Winston-Salem, North Carolina
- Contract Duration: 13 weeks
- Contract Dates: October 26, 2026–January 25, 2027
- Schedule: 3 night shifts per week, 36 hours weekly
- Shift Duration: 12-hour nights, approximately 6:45 p.m.–7:15 a.m.
- Unit: 48-bed mixed PCU, telemetry, and medical-surgical unit
- Patient Population: Adults and geriatric patients with COPD exacerbations, pneumonia, respiratory distress or failure, pulmonary embolisms, influenza, COVID-19, tracheostomies, and chronic ventilator needs
- Patient Ratios: Target ratios of approximately 1:4–5; may reach 1:6 in exceptional staffing situations
- Weekend Commitment: Every other weekend, with a goal of approximately four weekend shifts in six weeks based on staffing needs
- Floating: Required to comparable units within or near the facility
- Orientation: 24 hours
- Charting and Systems: Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR
PCU Travel Nurse Job Requirements
- At least 2 years of recent registered nursing experience in a PCU, stepdown, progressive care, intermediate care, or comparable telemetry setting
- Active North Carolina or Compact RN license; pending licensure may be considered for submission
- Current BLS and ACLS certifications
- NIHSS certification preferred
- Demonstrated competency with telemetry monitoring, cardiac rhythm interpretation, and dysrhythmia management
- Experience starting and maintaining peripheral IVs
- Experience with ventilators, tracheostomies, CPAP/BiPAP, chest tubes, and noninvasive airway management
- Experience with central-line care, heparin protocols, blood product administration, isolation precautions, and IV insulin protocols
- Ability to manage cardiac and vasoactive drips, including dopamine, diltiazem, and heparin, according to unit protocols
- Successful completion of required EKG testing before the start of the assignment
- Strong teamwork, communication, adaptability, and commitment to compassionate patient care
- Willingness to complete required pre-start testing and education within designated timeframes
Progressive Care Unit RN Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to adult and geriatric patients with mixed PCU, telemetry, and medical-surgical needs
- Monitor and interpret cardiac rhythms, recognize clinical deterioration, and respond promptly to changes in patient condition
- Manage patients requiring telemetry, CPAP/BiPAP, ventilator support for chronic tracheostomy or ventilator needs, chest tubes, and other advanced respiratory therapies
- Administer and monitor prescribed medications, cardiac drips, anticoagulation therapies, insulin protocols, and blood products
- Perform focused and comprehensive assessments, develop individualized care plans, and evaluate patient outcomes
- Initiate and maintain IV access and provide central-line and peripheral-line care
- Use rapid response and code-team resources appropriately during emergencies
- Collaborate with respiratory therapy, vascular access, pharmacy, rehabilitation, social services, and other members of the interdisciplinary care team
- Maintain accurate documentation and communicate patient updates using established handoff processes
- Float to comparable units as needed while maintaining safe, respectful, and patient-centered care
