Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiovascular Unit (CVU)

 

Department: Cardiovascular Unit (CVU)
Unit Size: 18 Beds
Patient Ratio: 1:4; 1:3 for post-surgical patients during the first 24 hours
Shifts: 6:30 AM–7:00 PM / 6:30 PM–7:00 AM
Weekend: Every Other Weekend
Scrubs: Navy Blue
Orientation: 1–2 Unit Shifts

Position Overview

We are seeking an experienced Cardiovascular Unit Registered Nurse (RN) to join an 18-bed CVU providing intermediate-level care to complex cardiac and vascular patients, including downgraded CVICU patients and post-surgical patients.

The unit works closely with the Thoracic Program, Electrophysiology (EP), Cath Lab, and Structural Heart Program, making this an excellent opportunity for an RN with strong cardiovascular and critical-care skills.

Patient Population

Common diagnoses and patient populations include:

  • Cardiac and vascular conditions
  • Post-Cath Lab patients
  • CVA / Stroke patients
  • Congestive Heart Failure (CHF)
  • Atrial Fibrillation with RVR
  • Post-surgical cardiovascular patients
  • Downgraded CVICU patients
  • Thoracic surgery patients
  • Structural heart patients

Patient Ratios

  • Standard ratio: 1:4
  • Post-surgical patients during the first 24 hours: 1:3

Required Experience

  • Minimum 1 year of experience with this patient population
  • Strong cardiovascular nursing experience
  • Experience caring for intermediate-care and post-surgical patients
  • Ability to manage and titrate cardiac/BP medications
  • Strong telemetry interpretation skills

Cardiac & Medication Skills

RNs are required to titrate medications, including:

  • Amiodarone (Amio)
  • Nitroglycerin (Nitro)
  • Nicardipine
  • Epinephrine
  • Cardizem
  • Other medications used for blood-pressure management

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS

Telemetry & Respiratory Care

  • Remote telemetry technicians available
  • Both hardwired telemetry and telemetry box capabilities
  • RNs must independently read and interpret telemetry strips
  • Respiratory support may include:
    • BiPAP
    • CPAP
    • Nasal Cannula
  • Respiratory Therapy support available

Unit Support

  • Hospitalist and Intensivist available in-house 24/7
  • Cardiology available on call after hours
  • Respiratory Therapy support available
  • Nurse Aides/PCTs available at approximately 1:18
  • Charge Nurse available on each shift and rarely takes a patient assignment

Schedule

  • Day Shift: 6:30 AM–7:00 PM
  • Night Shift: 6:30 PM–7:00 AM
  • Every Other Weekend
  • Schedule created by the Manager
  • No self-scheduling
  • No block scheduling
  • No call/standby requirement

Floating

Travelers may be required to float to units with the same or lower level of acuity, based on hospital needs and clinical competency.

Orientation

  • Unit-specific orientation is tailored to the RN's experience and needs
  • Typically 1–2 shifts on the unit

Navy Blue scrubs

Important Compliance Requirements

50-Mile Radius Rule

  • Candidate must reside outside a 50-mile radius
  • Driver's license is required at submission and will be used to determine the candidate's distance from the facility
  • Candidate cannot currently be full-time, part-time, or PRN with any facility associated with CommonSpirit, CHI, or Dignity

Orientation Exam

  • RN must complete a Pass/Fail, open-book exam on Friday during orientation
  • Exam covers skills learned during orientation
  • All necessary resources are provided
  • Minimum passing score: 90%
  • Failure to achieve 90% may result in contract termination

RTO Policy

  • RTO must be submitted upfront
  • Maximum 7 days of RTO for a 13-week contract
  • Additional RTO will not be approved after submission
