The facility has 247 licensed beds and is a Level 1 Pediatric Trauma Center. It functions as a teaching hospital and a Certified Stroke Center. The unit consists of 20 beds, divided into two mirrored sections, with a centralized nurses' station. The most critical patients are placed behind the nurses' station. The patient population includes individuals aged 0-18 years old with congenital heart differences. Patients may have undergone surgery, medical management of pre-transplant and post-transplant conditions, Cath lab procedures, and may require management of devices such as ventricular assistive devices, ECMO, Impella, dialysis, and Aquadex. Patient nurse ratios vary based on acuity, generally 2:1, 1:1, or 1:2. There is 1 health care technician per day to support unit secretary duties and nursing needs during the shift. Support roles within the department include a unit secretary, charge nurse, resource nurse, and 24/7 availability of respiratory therapists and intensivists. Telemetry monitoring is done centrally and at the bedside. Required technology includes the EMR system EPIC and Alaris IV pumps. Staff may be required to float to PICU, NICU, and General Pediatrics as needed. Weekends are rotated every other weekend or fewer as required. Travelers are expected to work 75% of holidays, typically every other holiday. Requests for time off must be approved by management. The unit culture emphasizes teamwork, trust, and accountability.
