Registered Nurse (RN) – Stroke/Neuro PCU

Position Overview

The Registered Nurse will provide specialized care in a Stroke/Neuro Progressive Care Unit (PCU). This role requires a strong foundation in monitoring patients with neurological conditions and the ability to respond to emergencies effectively. The nurse will work collaboratively with a dynamic healthcare team to ensure high-quality patient outcomes.

Scheduling Details

  • Shift Hours: 3x12-hour shifts, from 6:45 PM to 7:15 AM
  • Weekend Requirement: May be every other weekend or 6 shifts in a 6-week scheduling block
  • Holiday Requirement: Must work one holiday every 13-week contract
  • Requests for Time Off (RTO): All requests must be included with submission
  • Call Off Policy: Facility is allowed to call off 1 shift every 2 weeks
  • Floating: Will be required to float within skill set

Required Certifications

  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institute of Health Stroke Scale)

Required Clinical Skills

  • Cardiac monitoring and emergency response capabilities
  • Dysrhythmia interpretation and management
  • IV therapy, phlebotomy, and central/peripheral line care
  • Blood product administration
  • Medication administration, including cardiac drips (no titration)
  • Respiratory support, including nasal cannula and non-invasive airway management
  • Experience in a Neuro PCU environment
  • Understanding of isolation precautions and telemetry settings across various units

Unit Details

The Stroke/Neuroscience PCU specializes in the care and management of patients with hospitalist medicine, including those who have experienced strokes and other neurological conditions. This unit is recognized as a Joint Commission certified primary stroke center.

  • Patient-to-Nurse Ratio: Typically 1:5, with a staffing goal of 1:4
  • IV Drips Managed: Cardizem, Heparin, Insulin, low-dose dopamine/dobutamine, Amiodarone, Nitro, Bumex, Lasix, Lidocaine, Ketamine
  • Remote telemetry monitoring with patient care technician coverage implemented on the unit

This is a large acute care facility with over 700 licensed beds, recognized as a Level I Trauma Center, and holds Magnet designation. The facility is affiliated with a prestigious medical school, ensuring a robust environment for advanced specialty care.
