Job Title: Registered Nurse Profession: Nursing Specialty: Medical Surgical Oncology Duration: 13 weeks Shift: Night Hours per Shift: 12 hours Experience: Minimum of 2 years in acute care, first-timers accepted with teaching hospital experience License: Active RN license Certifications: AHA BLS Must-Have: Oncology skills checklist Teaching hospital experience BLS certification Description: This position is for a Registered Nurse specializing in Medical Surgical Oncology. The nurse will work in a night shift capacity. Candidates must have a minimum of 2 years of experience in acute care. First-time travelers are accepted if they have experience in a teaching hospital. Weekend shifts are required based on unit needs. Nurses may need to float to similar units or sister facilities as required. The unit has a total of 36 staffed beds. Charting is performed using an electronic health record system. Nurse-to-patient ratios are 1:6 but may vary based on staffing and needs. The unit primarily cares for patients with known cancer diagnoses who require surgical interventions. Nursing staff provides care to patients to help achieve specific post-operative milestones for discharge. No chemotherapy or biotherapy is administered on this unit. Staff is not required to be chemotherapy certified to apply. Nursing care is tailored to various diagnoses related to the abdomen and pelvic area. Major procedures involve gynecologic oncology, colorectal, pancreatic, liver, and stomach conditions. Nurses receive educational support to bridge knowledge gaps regarding specific precautions. Standard medical equipment is used, and any specialized training will be provided during orientation. The team works closely with interdisciplinary support services to enhance patient care.
