Neuro ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Overview

We are seeking a highly skilled Neuro ICU Registered Nurse to join our dynamic team. This position requires a strong background in neurocritical care and the ability to manage complex patient needs in a fast-paced environment.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide specialized care for patients with acute neurological conditions, including strokes and post-neurosurgery management.
• Conduct continuous monitoring and assessment of patient status, including ICP monitoring and management of cerebral drains.
• Administer medications, including continuous intravenous sedation and blood products, as required by individual patient needs.
• Interpret and manage dysrhythmias and perform IV starts and ventilatory management.
• Utilize isolation precautions and PPE as necessary to ensure patient safety.
• Participate in interdisciplinary team meetings to discuss patient care plans and progress.

Required Skills and Experience

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in a Neuro ICU setting.
• Experience with managing stroke patients, including both ischemic and hemorrhagic conditions.
• Proficient in handling external ventricular drains (EVD), lumbar drains, and other neurosurgical procedures.
• Certification in ACLS, BCLS, and NIH.
• Strong ability to interpret dysrhythmias and manage associated interventions.

Preferred Skills and Experience

• Experience with arterial line management.

Work Environment and Schedule

The Neuro ICU offers a patient-to-nurse ratio of 2:1, which may flex to 3:1 during high census periods. The average daily census is 11-12 patients. Shifts are 12 hours long from 18:45 to 07:15. This position requires working every other weekend.

Orientation will include 24 hours of training, which may occur over two consecutive days or nights.

Special Notes

• Must pass EKG testing prior to starting in this specialty.
• The unit does not accept first-time travelers; a strong neurocritical care background is essential.
