Description:
The staff Registered Nurse (RN) is a professional caregiver who assumes responsibility for a group of patients for a designated time frame.
The RN provides care via the utilization of the nursing process, nursing trends, technology, financial and human resources within the institution's philosophy.
The RN performs all responsibilities and duties required by the unit as specific to the scope of service.
The RN implements procedures and theories related to the specific area of practice.
The RN maintains up-to-date and accurate documentation of nursing care provided to assure the integration of information for use by the healthcare team.
The RN completes the initial assessment upon patient admission and develops an appropriate plan of care based on patient and family needs.
The RN implements the plan of care, nursing interventions, and patient care procedures.
The RN modifies the plan of care based on continuous evaluation.
The RN takes responsibility for patient and employee safety by reporting and/or correcting safety hazards and incidents.
The RN communicates with others directly and privately when necessary to resolve issues.
The RN offers constructive feedback to assist in the professional development of peers and confers with colleagues to expand their knowledge base.
The RN identifies their own learning needs and takes the initiative to begin appropriate solutions.
The RN fulfills all requirements of departmental competencies.
The RN receives patient Bedside Shift Report from another RN at the beginning of each shift.
This includes ensuring the inclusion of patient input, visual validation of a safe patient room environment, and updating the patient communication board.
The RN delegates patient care tasks/responsibilities to assigned healthcare team members and validates the completion of delegated tasks throughout the shift.
The RN completes and documents basic RN patient care activities such as assessments, interpretation of vital signs, and admission/discharge of patients.
The RN meets documentation standards for each assigned patient.
The RN provides patient medications utilizing the "5 Rights": Right Patient, Right Medication, Right Route, Right Dose, and Right Time.
The RN maintains patient safety as the highest priority by ensuring compliance with safety measures such as fall precautions, pressure ulcer prevention, and patient ambulation safety.
The RN maintains a positive attitude to promote a healthy work environment and healing patient environment.
The RN keeps a diligent focus on promptly answering patient call lights to ensure effective triage and completion of patient requests.
The RN uses critical thinking to evaluate the overall patient condition and uses nursing judgment to identify and act on changes in patient status.
The RN effectively communicates within the healthcare team to promote interdisciplinary collaboration, effective patient care coordination, and patient safety.
The RN effectively manages time to enable quick admission/discharge processes and facilitates completion of patient testing to move patients quickly towards discharge disposition.
