Job Title: Med/Surg Nurse Profession: Registered Nurse Specialty: Medical Surgical Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: Night Shift Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 2 years License: Active Registered Nurse license required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, PALS required Must-Have: - Must have ACLS, BLS & PALS certifications - Must have an active RN license Description: Med/Surg Nurses provide direct and individualized nursing care to patients based on the application of scientific nursing principles. In addition to general nursing care, responsibilities include consulting and coordinating with healthcare team members to assess, plan, implement, and evaluate patient care plans. Nurses prepare and administer medications and record prescribed medications. They report adverse reactions to medications or treatments in accordance with policy. Patients are educated on surgical procedures. Nurses record medical information and vital signs. They monitor and adjust specialized equipment used on patients and interpret electronic displays. Corrective actions are initiated whenever a patient displays adverse symptoms. Bedside care is provided for a wide variety of medical patients, including pre- and post-surgery patients. An educational plan for patients is initiated as prescribed. Patients and significant others are taught how to manage their illness/injury, including post-treatment home care needs. Duties include changing dressings, inserting catheters, and starting IVs. Nurses prepare equipment and assist during examinations and treatments. Response to life-saving situations is based on nursing standards and protocol. Participation in discharge planning is required. Time management skills are utilized effectively. All care information is recorded concisely, accurately, and completely in a timely manner. Other position-related duties may be assigned depending on the assignment setting.
