Teamwork is always supported and appreciated on the floor by staff. Great communication and relationships exist with providers on the unit. Surgical residents assist in covering most surgeons 24 hours a day. Clinical staff will interview candidates before selection for this position. The unit capacity is 32 beds. The population served includes patients with a variety of diagnoses, including bowel obstructions, wound infections, gastrointestinal cancers, and morbid obesity. Post-operative surgical care is provided for general surgery patients. The unit also cares for overflow medical and surgical patients from throughout the facility. Patients must be hemodynamically stable and not require mechanical ventilation. The ages of the patients served range from young adults to late adults (18-60+). The nurse-to-patient ratio is typically 1:6. The staffing plan includes registered nurses, licensed practical nurses, patient care technicians, and nurse interns. An RN assumes full responsibility for the patients on each team. BLS and NIH certifications are required.
