Registered Nurse (RN) - Medical Surgical Oncology

Position Overview

We are seeking a dedicated and skilled Registered Nurse (RN) to join our Medical Surgical Oncology unit. This role is vital in delivering exceptional patient care and supporting our oncology patients throughout their treatment journey.

Shift Details

• Night Shift: 4x12-Hour (19:00 - 07:00)
• Every Other Weekend Coverage

Responsibilities

The Registered Nurse will be responsible for the following:

• Providing high-quality nursing care to oncology patients in an inpatient setting.
• Administering chemotherapy and managing associated treatments.
• Understanding and managing various oncologic emergencies.
• Collaborating with interdisciplinary teams to ensure comprehensive patient care.
• Educating patients and their families on treatment plans and symptom management.
• Monitoring patient conditions and communicating any changes to the care team.
• Performing skillful IV therapy, blood administration, and managing central lines and ports.

Qualifications

Applicants must meet the following qualifications:

• Minimum of 2 years of nursing experience preferred.
• Experience in oncology preferred but not required.
• ACLS and BLS certifications required. ONS Chemo/Bio certification preferred.
• Proficiency in Cerner charting system preferred.

Required Skills

Key nursing skills necessary for this role include:

• IV Therapy and Infusion management.
• Central line and port care.
• Administration of chemotherapy and knowledge of precautions related to cytotoxic therapy.
• Ability to manage oncologic emergencies such as sepsis, spinal cord compression, and tumor lysis syndrome.
• Comprehensive medication management, including antibiotics and antiemetics.
• Effective communication and patient education skills.

Work Environment

This position is within a 12-bed inpatient oncology unit that also accommodates medical-surgical overflow. The daily census averages around 10 patients, and the unit offers support from various interdisciplinary teams.

Patient Demographics

The patient population primarily includes adults and geriatric patients with a range of diagnoses encompassing various cancers including but not limited to:

• Breast Cancer
• Lung Cancer
• Colorectal Cancer
• Prostate Cancer
• Ovarian Cancer

Orientation and Training

An orientation period will be provided to ensure successful integration into the unit, with support from the healthcare team throughout this process.

Additional Information

Candidates should be prepared to handle occasional unpredictability in scheduling due to the nature of healthcare. Reliable attendance is critical, and the expectation is set to maintain attendance standards throughout the contract duration.
