Surgical Short Stay Registered Nurse (RN)

Job Overview

The Surgical Short Stay unit is a 12-bed unit dedicated to the care of adult surgical patients. Most patients are admitted from PACU and typically remain for less than 24 hours. The unit also caters to pre-operative patients and inpatient surgical admissions when necessary.

Key Responsibilities

• Provide nursing care and support for adult surgical patients.
• Manage a nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:6.
• Assist with post-anesthesia care for patients transitioning from PACU.
• Deliver care to pre-operative and inpatient surgical admissions as needed.
• Float as required to inpatient surgery floors, holding areas, or medical floors.
• Participate in disaster response as part of the Storm Team or Hurricane Team.

Shift Details

• Schedule: 3x12 hours, 1900-0700.
• Every other weekend is required (12 weekend night shifts per contract).

Experience and Certifications

• Minimum of 2 years of medical-surgical experience required.
• Short stay experience is mandatory.
• ACLS and BLS certifications required.
• Charge nurse experience is preferred.
• Familiarity with EPIC documentation system is preferred.

Patient Diagnoses

Patients in the Surgical Short Stay unit represent a range of functional statuses and surgical conditions, including but not limited to:

• Colorectal
• Endoscopic
• General
• Gynecologic (GYN)
• Maxillofacial
• Neurologic
• Orthopedic
• Plastic
• Urologic
• Vascular

Special Equipment

Experience with special equipment is advantageous, including but not limited to:

• CBI
• Doppler ultrasound
• BD Alaris Infusion System
• JP drains
• Medela Wound Vac System
• Prevena Wound Vac System

Additional Requirements

• Must pass EKG testing prior to start for this specialty.
• A maximum of 7 days of request time off (RTO) permitted per contract.
• Availability to work holidays is required.
• No block scheduling is allowed unless requested as a weekend block.
