The facility has 637 licensed beds and is a teaching hospital with Level 1 Trauma Designation. The unit has a 35-bed capacity. The typical patient population includes orthopedic and trauma patients, those with acute or chronic diseases, and post-operative patients. Common co-morbidities include diabetes, hypertension, infections, congestive heart failure, and electrolyte imbalances. Patient ratios are approximately 1 RN to 4-6 patients, with support from CNAs and LPNs. Required skills include managing tracheostomies and chest tubes, starting peripheral intravenous lines, and administering insulin and heparin drips. Collaboration with an interdisciplinary team is essential for care coordination, discharge planning, and patient education. Support staff includes CNAs who assist with vital signs, glucose checks, bathing, feeding, and ambulating patients. A unit secretary is available daily, and nursing staff may also assist with phlebotomy. Resources include respiratory therapy, hospitalists, intensivists, and a telemetry monitoring unit. Technology used includes an electronic medical record system, IV pumps, medication dispensing systems, and various monitoring equipment. Floating may occur to adult med-surg and telemetry units within the facility. RNs are expected to have weekend availability and work one shift during major holidays. The unit culture is busy but emphasizes teamwork. Scrub colors are navy for RNs and ceil blue for LPNs.
