Description

American Traveler is hiring a Med/Surg RN for a float pool position at a Level II Trauma Center, requiring at least 18 months of Med/Surg experience and an active AL or compact RN license.

Details

  • Float pool position covering multiple Med/Surg units within a 492-bed hospital
  • Units include Trauma Surgical, Neuroscience, MedSurg/Oncology, Clinical Decision Unit, Orthopedics, and MS/Ortho/Urology
  • Patient populations vary by unit and include general surgery, vascular, neuro, oncology, ortho, and general medical cases
  • Typical patient ratios range from 1:5 to 1:6 depending on unit
  • 12-hour night shifts, 36-48 hours per week, starting at 7:00pm
  • Weekend rotation required (every other weekend or 4 weekend days per month)
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to like units (MS-MS, MS-ICU task, MS-ER/MS holds, ICU-ICU, ICU-MS task with limit of 3, ICU-ER/ICU holds)
  • Telemetry monitored by techs, but RNs required to interpret and confirm strip readings every 4 hours
  • Uses Cerner EMR (preferred), Plum 360 IV pumps, Omnicell medication dispensing, and Spacelabs monitors

Requirements

  • Active RN license (AL or compact) required
  • BLS and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 18 months of Med/Surg experience required
  • EPIC or Cerner EMR experience required
  • Skills may include wound care, chest tubes, NGT, PEG, trach care, ostomy/colostomy care, foley care, central line care, IV starts, and medication administration depending on assigned unit
  • Experience with PCA pumps, wound vacs, and nurse-driven foley protocols preferred for certain units
  • Chemo certification preferred for Oncology unit assignments

Additional Information

  • Assigned a home unit on the first day of orientation
  • Support staff includes CNAs, charge nurses, phlebotomy, IV/VAT team, hospitalists, and telemetry techs
  • Orientation includes 24 hours of classroom time and 24 hours on the unit for new or returning travelers gone 1+ years
  • Holiday expectations include coverage for one major and one minor seasonal holiday per policy
  • Scrubs of any color are accepted
  • Parking available in designated deck levels 2 through 4
  • First-time travelers welcome to apply with required experience
  • Staff must be separated from the facility for at least 6 months before returning as a traveler
  • Candidates must reside outside a 60-mile radius of the facility to be considered
