Job Description – Labor & Delivery (L&D) Registered Nurse

The Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (L&D RN) is responsible for providing comprehensive nursing care to obstetric patients throughout the antepartum, intrapartum, postpartum, and immediate newborn care phases. The RN will assess, plan, implement, and evaluate individualized patient care while collaborating with physicians, midwives, and the interdisciplinary healthcare team to ensure safe, high-quality maternal and neonatal outcomes.

Responsibilities:

  • Provide direct nursing care to laboring, postpartum, and high-risk obstetric patients.
  • Monitor maternal and fetal well-being using fetal monitoring and clinical assessments.
  • Assist with vaginal and cesarean deliveries, including preparation of the operating room and recovery care.
  • Administer medications, IV therapy, blood products, and other treatments as ordered.
  • Recognize and respond promptly to obstetric and neonatal emergencies.
  • Educate patients and families on labor, delivery, postpartum recovery, breastfeeding, and newborn care.
  • Document all patient care accurately in the Epic electronic medical record system.
  • Collaborate with physicians, anesthesia providers, neonatal teams, and other healthcare professionals to deliver quality patient care.
  • Float to comparable units within scope of practice when required.

Unit Information:

  • High-Risk Labor & Delivery Unit
  • 10 OB Triage Rooms
  • 10 Labor, Delivery & Recovery (LDR) Rooms
  • 3 Operating Rooms
  • 4 PACU Rooms
  • Average of 7 deliveries per day with frequent high-risk antepartum and induction patients.

Qualifications:

  • Minimum 2 years of Labor & Delivery RN experience.
  • First-time travelers accepted.
  • Active Alaska RN license preferred (pending license accepted; must complete the application within 48 hours of signing and have the license in hand before receiving an auto offer).
  • Required Certifications:
    • BLS
    • ACLS
    • AWHONN Intermediate Fetal Monitoring
    • AWHONN Advanced Fetal Monitoring
    • NRP
  • Charge Nurse experience preferred or willingness to be trained.

Assignment Details:

  • 13-week contract
  • ASAP start
  • 3×12-hour Night shifts (may rotate between days and nights every 4 weeks if needed)
  • Every other weekend required
  • No on-call
  • Guaranteed 60 hours every two weeks
  • May be floated to like units based on facility needs
  • Travelers must reside at least 50 miles from the facility.
