General Information

Location: Puyallup, WA

This facility is a Level III Trauma Center with a total of 375 licensed beds, providing comprehensive services in maternal health and newborn care.

Unit Overview

• 9 Labor & Delivery Rooms (LDR)
• 2 OB Operating Rooms (OR)
• 2 OB Post Anesthesia Care Units (PACU)
• 11 Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) beds
• 4 Pediatric beds
• 20 Mother/Baby unit beds
• 18 bed START unit for Perinatal Addiction
• 3 OB Emergency Department beds (for patients 20 weeks and above)

The START unit specializes in voluntary inpatient addiction medicine treatment for pregnant women seeking support for substance use disorders.

Patient Information

The unit serves a Level II Perinatal Center, primarily caring for patients 32 weeks gestation and above. Common patient conditions include hypertension, magnesium administration, and substance abuse management. The unit manages a high volume of low-risk patients requiring intermittent monitoring, epidurals, fetal monitoring, and IV administration.

On average, the unit handles 175-200 deliveries monthly.

Patient Ratios

• 1:1 ratio for active labor
• 1:2 ratio for non-active laboring patients

Required Qualifications

• Minimum of 1 year of experience required
• Experience with Labor and Delivery (LD) and postpartum care
• Ability to perform cervical exams, antepartum and labor care, amnio infusion, and fetal monitoring
• Basic breastfeeding knowledge and comfort with couplet care once mother and baby are stable
• Experience with HUGS Security system and Pyxis medication dispensing system is preferred

Certifications

• Basic Life Support (BLS)
• Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP)
• Fetal Monitoring Certification (AWHONN or Relias module)

Operational Support

The unit operates without Certified Nursing Assistants (CNA). Surgical Technologists assist Monday through Friday during specified hours. Phlebotomy services are available as needed.

Respiratory Therapy is available 24/7 to attend high-risk deliveries or monitor concerning fetal strips. A Hospitalist is available around the clock, along with an OB group that includes Laborists and midwives.

Scheduling and Orientation

• Rotating weekends: every other weekend required
• Schedule cycles are developed in three-week increments
• Shift times available: 0700-1900 or 1900-0700
• Orientation includes annual core competencies such as HIPAA and OSHA, along with unit competency assessments

Holiday Expectations

One major holiday and one minor holiday will be required each year. Requests for time off are subject to manager approval.
