Labor & Delivery Registered Nurse (RN) – Travel Nursing Contract in Midlothian, VA
Join a high-acuity Labor & Delivery team as a Travel Registered Nurse (RN) in Midlothian, Virginia, and provide compassionate, evidence-based care to mothers, newborns, and families. This 13-week night-shift travel nursing assignment offers the opportunity to support patients across antepartum, intrapartum, cesarean, postpartum, and emergency obstetrical care in a collaborative 12-bed unit. - Schedule: Three 12-hour shifts per week; approximately 36 hours weekly
- Weekend and Holiday Requirement: Every other weekend and major holidays
- On-Call: Up to 24 hours per six-week period
- Unit: 12-bed, high-acuity Labor & Delivery setting with typical nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:1–2, based on staffing needs
- Additional Expectations: Potential floating within Labor & Delivery units in the Richmond area
Labor & Delivery RN Job Requirements
- At least 1 year of Registered Nurse experience; 1–2 years of recent Labor & Delivery nursing experience strongly preferred
- Recent experience with antepartum, intrapartum, cesarean section, postpartum, and magnesium sulfate administration
- Current Registered Nurse license in Virginia or eligibility through a compact license
- BLS, ACLS, and NRP certifications required
- Fetal heart monitoring experience; C-EFM certification preferred
- Ability to circulate cesarean sections required; experience scrubbing or assisting with deliveries preferred
- Experience with fetal monitoring, cardiac monitoring, warmers, and blood glucose monitoring
- Epic and Perinatal Centricity experience preferred
- Successful completion of a dysrhythmia examination required
- Strong assessment, communication, prioritization, and emergency response skills
Labor & Delivery Nurse Responsibilities
- Provide comprehensive nursing care to the maternal-fetal dyad throughout pregnancy, labor, delivery, recovery, and postpartum care.
- Perform triage, prioritization, assessments, stabilization, resuscitation, and emergency management for obstetrical patients.
- Interpret electronic fetal monitoring and respond appropriately to changes in maternal or fetal condition.
- Care for high-acuity patients with complex pregnancies, substance use concerns, chronic conditions, and language or communication barriers.
- Administer medications safely, including magnesium sulfate, in accordance with clinical standards and applicable regulations.
- Assist with and circulate cesarean sections and support vaginal deliveries as needed.
- Provide newborn stabilization, neonatal resuscitation, glucose monitoring, and care using appropriate emergency and lifesaving equipment.
- Support breastfeeding, newborn care education, discharge planning, and follow-up instruction for patients and families.
- Develop, implement, evaluate, and revise individualized plans of care in collaboration with the interdisciplinary team.
- Delegate and coordinate care according to team members’ skills, knowledge, and scope of practice.
- Advocate for patient safety, privacy, dignity, and culturally responsive care while contributing to quality improvement efforts.
- Remain calm and adaptable during emergencies, protect patients and coworkers through infection-control practices, and maintain professional accountability.
