ICU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • Active Registered Nurse (RN) license
  • At least 1 year of recent critical care nursing experience
  • Experience caring for high-acuity patients; competency with mechanical ventilators and vasoactive infusions strongly preferred
  • Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Current Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification
  • Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification or competency
  • Strong independent clinical judgment, communication, teamwork, and adaptability

Critical Care Nursing Responsibilities

  • Provide inpatient-level nursing care to admitted patients boarding in the Emergency Department while awaiting transfer to an inpatient bed
  • Care for up to two high-acuity patients, including patients who may require mechanical ventilation and vasoactive infusions
  • Monitor patient status, recognize changes in condition, and initiate appropriate critical care interventions
  • Administer medications and treatments safely while maintaining accurate clinical documentation
  • Collaborate with Emergency Department physicians, hospitalists, critical care teams, inpatient services, and other members of the interdisciplinary team
  • Support patient safety, continuity of care, and timely transitions to inpatient units
  • Work within the Emergency Department boarder care model rather than taking routine Emergency Department patient assignments
  • Provide care to patients of varying acuity within established competency and scope of practice
  • Temporarily support another unit when organizational needs require, provided the assignment is consistent with clinical competency and skill set
