The department functions as a Trauma IV center. Patients requiring STEMI or stroke treatment are referred to other facilities. The Emergency Room consists of 14 beds and 2 trauma bays. There are 3 designated fast-track rooms for quicker patient processing. A separate triage area is available, and travelers can triage after familiarization with facility policies and procedures. Patients may be held in the department, with overflow managed in attached rooms as needed. Separate psychological seclusion rooms are available. Security is handled by local law enforcement; internal security is not on duty 24/7. On average, the Emergency Room treats 40-60 patients daily. The nurse-to-patient ratio is 1:3-4 during the day, adjusting to 1:2 overnight. Common patient diagnoses include trauma, STEMI cases, strokes, motor vehicle accidents, and agricultural injuries. Nurses are expected to manage common medication drips. Emergency Department physicians and mid-level providers are present 24/7. Charge nurses also maintain patient assignments, with varied schedules throughout the day. Support staff including Certified Nursing Assistants, medics, and LPNs provide coverage on a 24/7 basis. Respiratory Therapy services are available around the clock for procedures like ABGs and breathing treatments. Central monitoring stations are operated by nurses as monitor technicians are not utilized. X-ray services are located nearby and are accessible 24/7, while CT services are just down the hall. Phlebotomy services are available 24/7 to draw labs. Shift scheduling is managed by the nursing manager, who strives to minimize one-on-one rotation scheduling. Weekend work is required every other weekend. Holiday work includes participation during peak winter needs. Volunteering for additional shifts is encouraged but not mandatory. Inpatient floating to assist staff may be required. Scrub attire is any solid color that is clean and professional. There is a computer-based training component followed by two days of floor orientation. Unit-specific training covers policies and procedures relevant to the emergency department.
