Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN)

Job Overview

The Emergency Room Registered Nurse (ER RN) plays a vital role in providing high-quality care to patients in a fast-paced environment. This position involves assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating patient care within the emergency department, ensuring timely and effective care for individuals experiencing medical emergencies.

Shift Details

  • Shifts: 12-hour evening and night shifts with the possibility of day shifts as needed.
  • Guaranteed Hours: 36 hours per week.
  • Weekend and Holiday Requirements: Every other weekend and holiday.

Unit Information

The ER department is an Adult and Pediatric Level 2 Trauma Center, equipped to handle a variety of medical emergencies.

  • Bed Capacity: 38 bed unit combined Emergency and Urgent Care.
  • Trauma Bays: 5 trauma bays/resuscitation rooms available.
  • Triage: Nurses are expected to triage patients upon arrival, including those coming in via ambulance.
  • Common Patient Diagnoses: Chest pain, abdominal pain, sepsis, syncope, elevated heart rate, headache, and suicidal ideation.

Responsibilities

  • Perform patient assessments, monitor vital signs, and provide interventions as necessary.
  • Administer medications and manage intravenous (IV) therapy.
  • Collaborate with a multidisciplinary team, including emergency physicians and mid-level providers.
  • Participate in trauma interventions and resuscitations.
  • Document patient care accurately and timely in electronic health records.
  • Assist with patient triage and ensure efficient patient flow through the department.

Qualifications

  • Required Experience: Minimum of 2 years of Emergency Room experience.
  • Required Certifications: ACLS, BLS, NIHSS, PALS, TNCC (ENPC encouraged but not required).
  • Pediatric experience is preferred; Cerner experience is a plus.
  • Ability to work effectively in a high-stress environment and perform multiple tasks simultaneously.

Additional Information

  • Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7 for assistance with critical respiratory patients.
  • Laboratory Draws: Registered Nurses are responsible for drawing labs, with phlebotomy staff also available for blood cultures when necessary.
  • Monitor Technology: No dedicated monitor technicians; RNs are expected to monitor patients’ rhythms.
  • Continuous training and unit-specific orientation provided upon hiring.

This role is essential for maintaining the overall efficiency and quality of care within the emergency department, providing a critical service to the community.
