Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

We are seeking a dedicated Emergency Department Registered Nurse with at least 2 years of ED experience. This is an opportunity for first-time travelers to join a dynamic and fast-paced environment.

Unit Details

  • Level III Trauma Center with 375 licensed beds
  • 46 ED beds, including 5 safe psychiatric rooms
  • Average of 200 patients per day

Patient Demographics

The emergency department handles a diverse range of patients across all age groups, from pediatrics to geriatrics, with conditions including:

  • Trauma
  • Gunshot wounds (GSW)
  • Sepsis
  • COVID-19
  • STEMI (high volume)
  • Stroke
  • Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA)
  • Mental health issues
  • Respiratory concerns
  • High-acuity medical cases

Please note that the department does not perform invasive neurological procedures, such as craniotomies, and transfers a limited number of pediatric cases to specialized facilities.

Patient Ratios

On day shifts, the patient-nurse ratio is typically 1:4-5, with the ability to adjust based on acuity and staffing needs.

Required Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • PALS
  • TNCC
  • NIHSS
  • CPI/MOAB

Essential Skills

Candidates must possess:

  • General emergency department experience
  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • IV administration skills
  • Basic knowledge of medication administration, including drips
  • Experience with procedural sedation and blood administration
  • TNK administration experience is preferred
  • Recent EPIC electronic health record experience

Unit Support Structure

The emergency department features a well-equipped support system, which includes:

  • ER technicians for glucose checks, iStat, and splinting assistance
  • Charge nurses who rarely take patient assignments
  • Resource/Float nurses
  • Respiratory Therapy available 24/7
  • On-site ED Educator
  • Increased security measures around the clock
  • 24/7 Social Work Services
  • Pharmacy support available 24/7, assisting with medications and codes

Charting System and Equipment

The department utilizes the following systems:

  • EPIC for electronic charting (recent experience required)
  • Alaris pumps
  • Pyxis medication management system
  • Central and bedside telemetry monitoring

Orientation and Training

Orientation for new staff includes:

  • Day 1: New Employee Orientation, EPIC training (if necessary), hours in mental health area, and administrative introduction
  • Day 2: 12-hour shift with preceptor on assigned shift
  • Traveler telemetry competency assessment, to be completed and passed prior to starting

Scheduling Information

Shifts are flexible with a focus on meeting the needs of the department:

  • Consideration for 48-hour contracts
  • Schedulers are responsive to individual scheduling needs
  • Weekend shifts will vary based on unit demand
  • Scheduling provided three weeks in advance, with notifications about the schedule approximately ten days prior
  • Approval for time off is managed by the Nurse Manager
  • Holiday expectations include working two of five major holidays
