Emergency Department Nurse

General Information

Seeking an experienced Emergency Department Nurse for a Level III Trauma Center. The facility is equipped with 375 licensed beds and has an average patient volume of 200 patients per day.

Patient Types

  • Variety of patient age groups, including pediatrics to geriatrics
  • Trauma cases, gunshot wounds (GSW), sepsis, COVID-19, STEMI emergencies, strokes, diabetic ketoacidosis (DKA), and mental health cases
  • High incidence of geriatric patients, especially with falls and STEMI
  • Limited pediatrics, with transfers typically going to specialized facilities

Patient Ratios

The standard nurse-to-patient ratio during day shifts is 1:4-5, with the ability to flex to a maximum of 5 based on patient acuity and staffing needs.

Required Certifications

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
  • TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)
  • CPI/MOAB (Crisis Prevention Intervention/Management of Assaultive Behavior)

Skills Required

  • General Emergency Department experience, including cardiac rhythm interpretation and IV skills
  • Knowledge of drips and medication administration
  • Experience with procedural sedation and blood administration
  • Familiarity with TNK administration (preferred)
  • Competence in administering cardiac medications
  • Recent EPIC charting experience is required

Support on the Unit

  • Emergency Department Technicians available for glucose checks, iStat testing, and splinting assistance
  • Charge Nurse available, who rarely takes on patient assignments
  • Resource/Float Nurse accessible to assist staff
  • Respiratory Therapists on-site 24/7
  • Emergency Department Educator present for ongoing training
  • Increased security measures in place 24/7
  • House Supervisor available around the clock
  • Social Work Services dedicated to the Emergency Department 24/7
  • Pharmacy staff available 24/7 to assist with medication needs and emergency codes

Orientation

  • First Day: New Employee Orientation including badge issuance, EPIC training if needed, and introduction to the educator
  • Second Day: 12-hour shift with a preceptor on the assigned shift
  • Traveler Telemetry Competency must be completed and passed prior to start

Scheduling

Shifts available include:

  • Day/Mid shifts: 07:00, 11:00
  • Mid/Night shifts: 15:00, 19:00

Schedule tends to be established on a weekly basis but may change according to unit needs. Three-week advance scheduling is provided, with requests for time-off approved by the Nurse Manager.

Holiday expectations include working 2 out of 5 major holidays such as Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve, Christmas Day, New Year's Eve, and New Year's Day.
