General Requirements

• Minimum of 2 years of experience in an Emergency Department.
• Acceptance of first-time travelers.

Patient Demographics

The role involves caring for a diverse patient population, including:

• Geriatric patients
• Patients with abdominal pain
• Cardiac and stroke patients
• Psychiatric emergencies
• Respiratory issues
• Approximately 15% pediatric patients

Patient Ratios

The nurse-to-patient ratio is set at:

• 1 nurse for every 4 patients, organized within pods of 8 patients among 3 nurses.

Required Skills

• Thrombolytic therapy (TNK)
• Conscious sedation
• Chest tube management
• Central line placement

Licensure and Certifications

• BLS (Basic Life Support)
• ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
• PALS (Pediatric Advanced Life Support)
• TNCC (Trauma Nursing Core Course)
• CPI or MOAB certification
• NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Unit Support

• Emergency Department Techs: Phlebotomy certified, assisting with peripheral sticks (3 on 7a-7p; 3 on 7p-7a; 1 on 1-1).
• Receptionist/HUC: Available 24/7.
• Charge Nurse: Available 24/7.
• Phlebotomy: All ER techs are phlebotomy certified and lab services are available 24/7.
• IV/VAT Team: Many ER nurses trained in ultrasound-guided IVs; VAT team available Monday-Friday, 8am-4:30pm.
• Respiratory Therapy: Available 24/7.
• Hospitalist Coverage: Available 24/7.
• Telemetry monitoring: Conducted bedside and at the nurse’s station.

Technology and Equipment

• EMR System: EPIC (experience required).
• IV Pumps: Alaris.
• Medication Dispensing: Pyxis.

Orientation and Training

• 1-week orientation includes NEO, EPIC training, skills evaluation, general check-off, and position-specific training.
• 2-3 precepted shifts included.
• MHS Tele Test completion prior to arrival.

Scheduling and Shifts

• Weekend rotation: Every other weekend required.
• Holiday Expectations: 1 holiday commitment per contract.
• Approval of Requested Time Off (RTO): Up to 7 days can be approved.
• Available Shift Times:
  • Days: 7a-7p, 7a-3p, 8a-4p, 9a-7p
  • Mids: 10-10, 11-11, 12-12, 1-1, 3-3, 4p-2a
  • Nights: 7p-7a
