Registered Nurse (RN) - MS/Tele Float

Job Overview

This position is for a Registered Nurse (RN) specializing in Medical/Surgical and Telemetry float support. The role involves working in a high-acuity environment within an inpatient holding area that is integrated with the Emergency Department, caring for adult patients awaiting inpatient beds.

Key Responsibilities

  • Provide nursing care to patients with a variety of medical and surgical diagnoses, including high acuity patients.
  • Monitor patients in a telemetry setting, performing interpretation and management of dysrhythmias.
  • Float to various units, including the Emergency Department and MedSurg areas, as needed.
  • Administer medications and manage intravenous (IV) lines and blood products.
  • Perform necessary procedures such as colostomy and feeding tube care, chest tube management, and phlebotomy.
  • Utilize rapid response teams effectively as needed for patient care.
  • Engage in patient education and provide compassionate care throughout the patient's stay.

Qualifications

  • Minimum Experience: 2 years as a Registered Nurse in a clinical setting.
  • Traveler Experience: Required.
  • Certifications: BLS and ACLS required; NIHSS and IV insulin protocols preferred.
  • Skills: Strong background in MS/Tele, telemetry monitoring, and management of complex patient care situations.

Work Environment

  • Target patient ratios: 1:6 for MS/Tele and 1:4 for PCU-level patients.
  • Scheduled shifts primarily during the night (3x12 hour shifts).
  • Weekend work required, typically every other weekend.

Special Requirements

  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start.
  • Contract staff may be required to participate in the Storm/Hurricane Team and work during catastrophic events or mass casualties.

Unit Overview

The ED Holding unit is focused on providing support to patients located within the Emergency Department awaiting inpatient beds. The registered nurses will be expected to maintain a high level of care while adapting to varying patient conditions and hospital needs.

Equipment and Systems

  • Standard medical equipment, including cardiac monitors and IV pumps.
  • Utilization of Pyxis for medication management and Epic for documentation.
  • Communication will be conducted using SBAR protocol.

Orientation

New hires will undergo a 12-hour orientation to familiarize themselves with the unit procedures and protocols.

Attire

Navy scrubs are required for all staff in this unit.
