Travel Registered Nurse (RN) – Cardiac Stepdown / Progressive Care | Dayton, Ohio
Join a high-acuity cardiac stepdown team in Dayton, Ohio, as a travel Registered Nurse (RN caring for medically complex adult and geriatric patients in a collaborative inpatient setting. This 13-week travel nursing assignment is ideal for an experienced cardiac stepdown, progressive care, or telemetry nurse who is confident with cardiac telemetry, dysrhythmia interpretation, IV therapy, and cardiac drip titration. - Shift: 12-hour nights, approximately 7:00 p.m.–7:30 a.m.
- Weekend and Holiday Coverage: Every other weekend and holiday availability required
- Unit: 36-bed cardiac telemetry and advanced care unit
- Patient Population: Adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
- Floating: May be required to medically appropriate units or nearby locations based on census and staffing needs, including caring for emergency department boarders
Registered Nurse Job Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license in Ohio or a valid compact-state license
- At least 2 years of recent RN experience in a cardiac stepdown, progressive care, PCU, or similar telemetry setting
- Documented experience caring for stepdown or progressive care patients with approximately 1:5–6 patient ratios
- Current Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
- Current NIH Stroke Scale (NIHSS) certification
- Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support (ACLS) certification preferred
- Recent EPIC inpatient charting experience
- Ability to successfully complete an online EKG and telemetry competency assessment before the assignment begins
- Strong ability to read and interpret cardiac rhythms
- Competency with IV starts, telemetry monitoring, and management of cardiac and insulin infusions
- Willingness to float according to unit and staffing needs without restrictions
- Ability to complete required laboratory work and EKG competency testing within 72 hours of signing the contract
- Requested time off must be submitted with the initial application; up to 14 days may be allowed per contract
Cardiac Stepdown RN Responsibilities
- Provide safe, compassionate nursing care to patients with heart failure, chest pain, NSTEMI, post-procedure cardiac conditions, atrial fibrillation or flutter, dysrhythmias, sepsis, COPD exacerbations, and other complex medical conditions
- Perform comprehensive nursing assessments and promptly identify changes in patient condition
- Monitor and interpret telemetry rhythms and respond appropriately to dysrhythmias
- Initiate, manage, and titrate ordered infusions such as heparin, nitroglycerin, amiodarone, diltiazem, insulin, and other cardiac medications
- Provide pre- and post-care for cardiac catheterization, angiography, and other cardiac procedures
- Manage chest tubes, feeding tubes, high-flow nasal cannula, IV access, and other progressive care interventions within scope of practice
- Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, rapid response teams, IV teams, rehabilitation services, and other interdisciplinary partners
- Support emergency response and code team processes when indicated
- Safely transition between units when floating and provide care appropriate to the assigned patient population
- Accurately document assessments, interventions, medication administration, and patient responses in EPIC
