  • Schedule: 36 hours per week; 3 shifts per week
  • Shift: 12-hour day shifts, 7:00 a.m. to 7:30 p.m.
  • Patient Population: Neonates, including infants born at 22 weeks gestation and above
  • Typical Patient Assignment: Approximately 2–3 neonates
  • Daily Census: Approximately 30 patients
  • Additional Scheduling Note: The RN may float to other appropriate units within the healthcare system as needed.

NICU Registered Nurse Job Requirements

  • At least 1 year of professional NICU nursing experience
  • Recent experience in a Level III or Level IV NICU preferred
  • Active Registered Nurse license in Ohio or a valid compact-state RN license in hand at the time of submission
  • Basic Life Support (BLS) certification
  • Neonatal Resuscitation Program (NRP) certification
  • Graduate of an ACEN- or CCNE-accredited nursing program
  • Demonstrated competency caring for neonates younger than 24–28 weeks gestation
  • Proficiency with Epic electronic health record (EHR) documentation
  • Two professional references, including at least one manager, director, supervisor, or other formal leader
  • Ability to complete required credentialing and Ohio fingerprinting promptly after acceptance
  • Flu vaccination required; medical exemptions may be considered

NICU RN Responsibilities

  • Provide comprehensive, developmentally appropriate nursing care to critically ill neonates in a Level III NICU.
  • Care for patients experiencing respiratory distress, glucose management concerns, infectious conditions, and complex cardiovascular or gastrointestinal needs.
  • Support neonates requiring surgical or cardiac interventions and coordinate transfers when indicated.
  • Manage ventilator settings and respiratory support modalities, including AC, PC, SIMV, CPAP, BiPAP, and PEEP.
  • Administer medications and therapies such as IV vasopressors, surfactants, and steroids using established safety protocols.
  • Perform arterial line management, central and implanted line care, and umbilical artery and umbilical vein catheter management.
  • Provide and monitor oral, nasogastric, and nasojejunal feedings, including bottle, breast, and gavage feeding methods.
  • Recognize and manage neonatal abstinence syndrome interventions as directed by the care plan.
  • Interpret and respond to cardiovascular dysrhythmias and changes in patient condition.
  • Apply infection-control precautions and safe IV therapy practices.
  • Document accurately in Epic and communicate patient updates using the SBAR method.
  • Collaborate with nurse practitioners, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, physical therapy, radiology, social services, interpretation services, and other members of the multidisciplinary team.
