American Traveler is hiring a Neuro Med-Surg RN for a 13-week night shift assignment requiring level 1 trauma experience and prior dedicated neuro unit experience.

Details

  • Work in the Neuro Med-Surg Acute unit of a hospital environment
  • 54-bed unit with 2 semi-private rooms
  • Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, general neuroscience cases, and some medical overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • Nurse aide/patient care tech support present with ratios of 1:9-10 on days/evenings and 1:10-12 on nights
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage 24/7, with charge nurse only taking assignments when short-staffed
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Philips monitors, so RNs are not required to read their own strips
  • High flow oxygen used occasionally for stable COVID patients
  • RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • Uses EPIC EMR
  • 12-hour night shifts
  • Every other weekend required (Saturday and Sunday, both shifts)
  • Every other holiday required
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating required in rotation with staff to general unit floors, with limited float assignments outside the general unit based on competency

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Current BLS (AHA) and NIHSS certifications required
  • Minimum 1 year of nursing experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • Prior travel nursing experience required; no first-time travelers considered
  • Negative drug screen required for all panels

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care to neuroscience and medical overflow patients on an acute med-surg unit
  • Troubleshoot respiratory therapy equipment as needed, though RTs manage vents, CPAP, BiPAP, and high flow devices
  • 2-day unit-specific orientation including computer training with an educator, followed by a precepted patient care day
  • No scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are permitted
  • Local candidates accepted, though a reduced local rate applies to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility
  • No radius rule restricting eligibility for the position
