Description

American Traveler is hiring an RN for a Neuro Med-Surg unit requiring Level 1 trauma experience and prior dedicated neuro unit background.

Details

  • Acute care Med-Surg Neuro unit with 54 beds (2 semi-private)
  • Patient population includes stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, head injury, and other neuroscience diagnoses, with occasional medical overflow
  • Nurse-to-patient ratios of 1:4-5 on days and 1:5-6 on nights
  • Nursing aides/patient care techs support the unit at ratios of 1:9-10 on days and evenings and 1:10-12 on nights
  • Charge nurse and house supervisor coverage 24/7, with charge nurse taking assignments only when short-staffed
  • House-wide telemetry monitoring using Phillips monitors, so nurses are not required to read their own strips
  • RNs required to titrate drips, including heparin gtt based on PTT
  • High flow oxygen used for stable COVID patients only, which is rare on this unit
  • 12-hour night shifts, scheduled as a single shift
  • Every other weekend (Saturday and Sunday) and every other holiday required
  • No call or standby requirements
  • Floating required in rotation with staff to general unit floors; floating outside the general unit limited to competent skills with a trained nurse

Requirements

  • Active IL RN license required
  • Required certifications: BLS (AHA) and NIHSS
  • Minimum 1 year of RN experience required
  • Level 1 trauma experience required
  • Prior experience on a dedicated neuro unit required
  • Heparin drip titration experience required
  • EPIC EMR experience
  • Previous travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers will not be considered

Additional Information

  • Provide direct nursing care to neuroscience patients including stroke, spine surgery, seizure, brain tumor, and head injury cases
  • No scrub color requirement, but tattoos must be covered while on duty and only ear piercings are allowed
  • Unit orientation consists of 2 days covering computer systems and unit-specific training with an educator, plus 1 day of patient care with a preceptor
  • COVID vaccination is not required for this facility
  • Local candidates accepted; local rate applies to clinicians with a permanent address within 50 miles of the facility, resulting in a reduced bill rate
