- Unit: 41-bed medical-surgical unit
- Typical Night Shift Ratio: 1 nurse to 6–7 patients
- Floating: First to float within the nurse’s skill set; cross-campus floating may be required with advance notice
Medical-Surgical RN Job Requirements
- Active Registered Nurse (RN) license; a current compact nursing license is preferred
- At least 2 years of strong medical-surgical nursing experience
- At least 1 completed travel nursing assignment
- Level II trauma experience
- Associate degree or nursing certificate
- Current American Heart Association (AHA) BLS certification
- Current NIHSS certification
- Recent Epic electronic health record (EHR) charting experience; completion of an Epic checkoff class is required
- Strong patient assessment, prioritization, clinical judgment, and critical-thinking skills
- Ability to adapt to change, work effectively under pressure, and collaborate with patients, families, and the healthcare team
- Professional presentation required; scrubs must be free of competing health-system or agency logos
Medical-Surgical Nursing Responsibilities
- Provide safe, comprehensive nursing care to post-surgical and medical-surgical patients
- Care for patients with conditions including urinary tract infections, sepsis, COPD, CHF, and high fall risk
- Monitor and manage remote telemetry patients and promptly identify changes in patient condition
- Perform and document nursing assessments, medication administration, care planning, and patient education in Epic
- Manage chest tubes, NG and PEG tubes, straight catheterization, Foley catheters, ostomies, tracheostomy care, PCA therapy, and heparin infusions
- Safely administer blood and blood products according to established protocols
- Demonstrate sound clinical judgment while caring for a typical night-shift assignment of 6–7 patients
- Float within the nurse’s competency to support nearby units or campuses when needed
- Participate in the teaching-hospital environment, including precepting students or new hires when assigned
- Work collaboratively with experienced leadership and CNA support to promote quality patient outcomes
