Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry position requiring ventilator care experience and charge nurse capability.

Details

  • Work in the Medical and Telemetry unit (IU 4EF) of a Level III Trauma Center and Comprehensive Stroke Center
  • 24-bed unit with private rooms, including 4 ventilator capable rooms
  • Patient population includes COPD, chest pain, post cardiac cath, COVID, DM, cellulitis, chronic trachs, wounds, ventilators, surgical, and heart failure cases
  • Average length of stay is 5-10 days
  • RN to patient ratio is 1:4-5 on days/evenings and 1:6-7 on nights
  • Care for ventilator patients (max 4 of 24 beds) with RN managing patient care while RT manages the vent
  • 12hr night shift schedule (1900-0730), 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required every other weekend
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to other medical/surgical units and ED holding (1:4 ratio), with travelers floated first
  • Uses EPIC EMR, Alaris pumps, Pyxis, and GE monitors
  • Centralized telemetry monitoring with unit secretary, hospitalist, and RT support available 24/7

Requirements

  • Active WI or compact RN license required
  • BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years of RN telemetry experience required
  • Minimum 12 months of core experience in unit specialty within the last year
  • Charge nurse experience required and must be willing to perform charge duties
  • Ventilator experience required prior to arrival
  • Skilled in wound care, surgical/post-op care, IV starts, wound vacs, PEG tubes, tube feedings, TPN, and tracheostomy care
  • Able to read and interpret rhythm strips and manage central lines
  • Able to titrate cardizem, heparin, and insulin drips
  • Experience with chest tubes and drains required
  • EPIC EMR experience required
  • One professional reference dated within the last year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN required
  • Candidate's middle name/initial, DOB, and last 4 of SSN required for consideration

Additional Information

  • Provide direct care for high-acuity medical and surgical patients including ventilator-dependent and tracheostomy patients
  • Document pain levels before and after medication administration per facility protocol, ensuring medication matches reported pain score
  • Charge nurse role includes light patient assignment when staffing allows
  • Support staff available including unit secretary, hospitalist, RT, phlebotomy, and IV/VAD team
  • Orientation includes EPIC system training, badge/log-in access, and a 12-hour orientation with charge nurse
  • One holiday required per contract
  • No on-call responsibilities
  • Scrubs of any color accepted except camo or denim
  • Fast-paced, high-acuity unit with strong team culture and communication
  • First-time travelers are not considered for this position
  • Local candidates accepted at the same rate with no radius restrictions
  • Former employees of the health system must be separated for at least 12 months before being eligible for travel assignments
