Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Telemetry unit requiring ventilator competency, charge nurse experience, and a WI or compact RN license.

Details

  • Medical/Surgical and Telemetry unit within a Level III Trauma Center and Magnet-designated hospital
  • 24-bed unit with private rooms, including 4 ventilator-capable rooms
  • Patient population includes COPD, chest pain, post cardiac cath, COVID, DM, cellulitis, chronic trachs, wounds, ventilators, surgical, and heart failure patients
  • Average length of stay is 5-10 days
  • RN to patient ratio of 1:4-5 on days/evenings and 1:6-7 on nights
  • Tech to patient ratio of 1:6 on days and 1:8 on nights
  • Care for ventilator patients with RNs managing the patient while RT manages the vent
  • 12-hour night shift schedule (1900-0730), 36 hours per week
  • Weekend rotation required every other weekend
  • No on-call requirements
  • Floating required to other Med/Surg units and ED holding (1:4 ratio), with travelers floated first
  • Uses EPIC EMR, Alaris pumps, Pyxis, and GE monitors

Requirements

  • Active WI or compact RN license required
  • BLS certification required
  • Minimum 2 years RN experience in Telemetry
  • Minimum 12 months of core experience in unit specialty within the last year
  • Charge nurse experience required and must be comfortable performing charge duties
  • Ventilator experience required prior to arrival
  • Skilled in wound care, surgical/post-op care, IV starts, wound vacs, PEG tubes, tube feedings, TPN, and trach care
  • Able to read and interpret rhythm strips and manage central lines
  • Able to titrate cardizem, heparin, and insulin drips
  • Experience with chest tubes, drains, and tracheostomy management
  • High acuity experience required
  • Candidate's middle name/initial, DOB, and last 4 of SSN required for consideration
  • At least 1 professional reference dated within the last year from a Supervisor, Manager, Director, or Charge RN

Additional Information

  • Support on the unit includes a charge nurse, 24/7 unit secretary, hospitalist, and RT, plus centralized telemetry monitoring, phlebotomy, and an IV/VAD team for central lines
  • Techs assist with glucose checks, vitals, and IV removal
  • Orientation includes EPIC training, badge/log-in setup, and a 12-hour orientation with the charge nurse
  • Ventilator training includes a 3-hour class taught by RT plus 12 additional hours of orientation with vent patients
  • Schedules are made 6 weeks at a time and released 2 weeks prior
  • One holiday required per contract
  • Facility fatigue policy limits staff to no more than 60 hours per week or 5 consecutive 12-hour shifts
  • Scrubs may be any color except camo or denim
  • Must document pain levels before and after administering pain medication, ensuring medication matches the reported pain score
  • Unit culture is fast-paced and high acuity with strong teamwork and communication
  • First-time travelers are not accepted for this position
  • Former employees of Advocate Health or its subsidiaries must be separated for at least 12 months before being eligible
  • Local candidates accepted at the same rate with no radius restrictions
