Description

American Traveler is hiring an experienced RN for a Med/Surg Tele position requiring 2 years of experience and prior successful travel assignments.

Details

  • MS/Tele unit caring primarily for stroke patients, along with neurosurgery and other neuro diagnoses such as epilepsy and subdural hematomas
  • Unit includes a 4-bed Epilepsy Monitoring Unit (EMU), though travelers are not typically trained for this area
  • 42 daily census with 43 rooms/beds
  • 1:6 patient ratio
  • Day shift, 3x12-hour shifts (6:45 AM-7:15 PM)
  • 36 or 48 hours per week available
  • Every other weekend required
  • Floating required to other MS/Tele areas, which may include COVID care units
  • Frequent floating may be required based on unit needs
  • Uses Epic, Pyxis, and SBAR charting/communication systems
  • Unit orientation is 36 hours

Requirements

  • Active NC or compact RN license required (pending acceptable at submission)
  • Minimum 2 years of RN experience required, including at least 1 year of direct Med/Surg experience (not MS/Tele) in work history
  • Additional experience may include MS/Tele, tele, or PCU to total 2 years combined
  • Must have completed at least 2 successful travel contracts prior to applying
  • Current certifications required: BLS and NIHSS
  • ACLS preferred but not required
  • Required skills: IV starts, telemetry monitoring, interpretation and management of dysrhythmias, and Med/Surg neuro experience
  • Additional skills include care for CVA, intracranial bleeds, seizure disorders, spinal cord injury, TBI, and substance withdrawal
  • Experience with central line and peripheral line care/management
  • Experience managing cardiac and vasoactive drips; titration experience preferred
  • Epic charting experience required
  • Must pass EKG testing prior to start

Additional Information

  • Provide direct patient care for stroke, neurosurgical, and other neurological patients including epilepsy and traumatic brain injury cases
  • Utilize rapid response and code teams as needed for cardiac emergencies
  • Navy scrubs required
  • Must work 2 of the 3 major holidays
  • RTO up to 7 days can be auto-approved if it does not fall on a holiday; additional RTO requires facility approval
  • No RTO allowed during the first week of assignment
  • Any missed shifts due to call-offs must be made up during the same week or at the end of the contract
  • Local candidates within 50 miles accepted at a lower rate
  • Previous Novant Health or New Hanover employees (perm/PRN/EP) must wait 12 months before applying and disclose employment history for facility approval
  • Travel pairs allowed if on different units with separate transportation
  • First-time travelers will not be considered for this position
  • Weekly orientation schedule
  • Pre-start and annual online training modules required (approximately 8-10 hours for acute care roles)
