General Information

This position involves floating within designated areas across all Intensive Care Units (ICUs), Progressive Care Units (PCUs), Critical Care Units (CCUs), and Emergency Department holding units. Candidates should have a minimum of one year of experience working in an ICU setting and may include first-time travelers with considerable float pool experience.

Patient Types

Travelers can expect to care for a variety of patients, including:

  • COVID Patients
  • Neuro, Trauma, Medical, Surgical Patients
  • Sepsis, Pneumonia, Diabetic Ketoacidosis (DKA), Delirium Tremens (DTs)
  • Multi-system failure, Spinal Injuries
  • Pre/post-catheterization patients (radial approach)
  • General Surgery Patients
  • Respiratory Compromise, Congestive Heart Failure (CHF), Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease (COPD)
  • Gunshot Wounds (GSW), Stabbings, Motor Vehicle Accidents (MVA)
  • Strokes, Traumatic Brain Injuries (TBI), Various Back Surgeries

CVICU Responsibilities

In the Cardiovascular Intensive Care Unit (CVICU), responsibilities include:

  • Post-operative care for CABG (10/week), Esophagectomy, TAVR (3/week), AAA repair, Thoracic and Vascular surgeries, and Post-arrest patients

Patient Ratios

  • ICU: 1:2
  • PCU/ACC/CCU: 1:4
  • ER Holding: Same ratio based on patient's level of care

Certifications Required

  • ACLS
  • BLS
  • NIHSS

Required Skills

  • Cardiac rhythm interpretation
  • Ventilator and BiPAP management
  • Management of invasive lines
  • Ostomy care, general drains, tracheostomy care
  • Chest tube management, lumbar drains
  • IV medication titration

Support on the Unit

Support structures include:

  • Charge Nurse available
  • Hospitalist, Respiratory Therapists, and Intensivists on duty 24/7
  • Cardiologist on-call 24/7 for CVICU and CCU

Charting System

Experience with the Epic charting system is required.

Scheduling

Scheduling is typically arranged for three weeks at a time, released 7-10 days prior. Shifts may include:

  • Every other weekend
  • Back-to-back weekends (rare occurrence)
  • No self-scheduling or guarantee of a regular schedule

Time Off

More than five days of time off requires manager approval.

Floating Requirements

Travelers may float to:

  • Neuro, Trauma, Medical, or Cardiac ICUs
  • CCU (Cardiac Step Down)
  • PCU/ACC
  • ED Holding
  • Med Surg Units
  • Any open surge areas for the units above

Travelers may also be required to float to another facility within the region if necessary, with prior notification.

Orientation

  • 1 day of general hospital orientation
  • 1 day of unit orientation (12 hours) in the ICU
  • 1 day of (12 hours) in similar units
