ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

General Information

This position is for an ICU Registered Nurse in a mixed intensive care unit that includes MICU, SICU, CICU, and TICU, all divided into pods. Nurses in this role will not float to the CVICU side unless they have experience specific to that unit/specialty.

Qualifications

  • A minimum of 2 years of ICU experience is preferred, excluding travel assignments.
  • Consideration will be given to candidates with 1.5 years of ICU experience and significant RN experience outside of ICU upon management approval.
  • First-time travelers will not be accepted; candidates must have completed at least one prior travel assignment.
  • Travelers must reside at least 100 miles away from any area facility.
  • Permanently employed staff must wait for one year before returning as travelers.

Patient Demographics

The ICU manages complex patient cases including but not limited to:

  • Medical and surgical patients
  • Cardiac patients (preferred)
  • Neurosurgical patients
  • Trauma patients

Common diagnoses include ARDS, MI, CVA/TIA, post-surgical recovery, and trauma cases.

Preferred Skills and Experience

  • Cardiac experience is preferred; experience with CABG/TAVR 24 to 48 hours post-op is highly valued.
  • Candidates must have experience with critical care patients and advanced clinical skills.
  • Comfortable with IV medications, including vasopressors, sedation, and paralytics.
  • Proficient in hemodynamic monitoring, ventilator management, telemetry, and critical thinking.
  • Experience with Impella, IABP, and CRRT is strongly preferred.
  • Familiarity with Epic is required.

Certifications

  • BLS
  • ACLS
  • NIHSS
  • TNCC (mandatory to obtain prior to start)

Unit Support and Resources

  • CNA support: 1-2 Nurse Aides per unit along with mobility float aides.
  • Resource Nurse available based on staffing levels.
  • 24/7 Respiratory Therapy assistance.
  • Charting is done through Epic.

Work Schedule and Orientation

Shifts are generally 48 hours per week. Weekend rotation is aimed for every other weekend, though this is not guaranteed. There are specific holiday restrictions, particularly during major local events.

Orientation consists of:

  • Hospital orientation (1) 8-hour session.
  • Department orientation (1) 4-hour session.
  • (2) 12-hour shifts on the floor for practical orientation.
  • (1) Additional 12-hour independent shift for travelers to complete their required hours.
