ICU Registered Nurse (RN)

Position Overview

This position requires a minimum of 3 years of recent ICU experience to be considered. Experience must include either neuro or cardiovascular (CV) experience.

Certification Requirements

  • BLS (Basic Life Support)
  • ACLS (Advanced Cardiovascular Life Support)
  • NIHSS (National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale)

Unit Information

Specialty: Surgical ICU - Trauma Neuro Surgery

  • Number of Beds: 32
  • Nurse-Patient Ratios: 1:2 or 1:1

Common diagnoses/types of patients include:

  • Level 1 trauma center cases
  • Falls, gunshot wounds (GSW), blunt trauma, motor vehicle accidents (MVAs)
  • Patients over the age of 15
  • Exploratory laparotomy (ex-lap), craniotomy, specialty neuro-surgery cases
  • Stroke (CVA), status post-tPA, COVID, sepsis, ARDS

Responsibilities

Staff are expected to:

  • Titrate intravenous drips including but not limited to: Propofol, Fentanyl, Versed, Precedex, Morphine, Dilaudid, Ketamine, Rocuronium, Levophed, Vasopressin, Cardene, Labetalol, Dopamine, Dobutamine, Heparin, and Insulin.
  • Float to telemetry as required with a patient ratio of 1:3 or 1:4.
  • Participate in the validation of skills for trauma, neuro, and specialty devices as needed.

Additional Information

  • Charge Nurse: Yes, charge nurses do not take patients.
  • No nursing aids on the unit; used only for sitters and as health unit secretaries.
  • Hospitalist or Intensivist available on-site 24/7.
  • Respiratory Therapy (RT) is available in the ICU 24/7.
  • Self-scheduling is available, with three weekend shifts required in a four-week schedule.
  • One holiday may be taken off during the assignment.

Orientation

Unit/department-specific orientation is provided over 1-2 days.

Location

Position located in a surgical ICU setting in the region of City, State.

Qualifications

Candidates accepted for this role must be RNs with a minimum of 3 years of ICU experience, with at least 2 years specifically in an ICU setting. While Level 1 trauma or neuro experience is preferred, it is not required. Prior experience in a similar-sized ICU is advantageous.

UNA Dysrhythmia Exam is required to be completed 24-48 hours prior to acceptance of the position, with a maximum of 2 attempts allowed. A pass/fail simulation lab assessment will take place on the first day of orientation.
