Travel Emergency Department Registered Nurse (RN) – Upper Marlboro, MD Contract

This 13-week travel assignment is an excellent opportunity for an experienced ED RN or Emergency Room Nurse to care for patients across the lifespan, from neonates and pediatrics to adults and geriatrics. You’ll support a high-acuity environment with approximately 140 daily visits, a 46-bed department, and a typical nurse-to-patient ratio of 1:4, with up to 1:5 for lower-acuity assignments.

  • Weekend Requirement: Every other weekend
  • Holiday Requirement: Holidays as scheduled
  • On-Call: Not required
  • Floating: Within the nursing specialty, including the Emergency Department border area, as needed
  • Orientation: 36 hours
  • Patient Population: Neonates, infants, children, adolescents, adults, and geriatric patients
  • Department Volume: Approximately 140 visits per day with 46 beds

Emergency Department RN Job Requirements

  • Active Maryland RN license or compact RN license at the time of submission
  • Minimum of 3 years of Emergency Department or Emergency Room nursing experience
  • Travel nursing experience required; first-time travelers may be considered with 5 or more years of relevant experience
  • Epic electronic medical record experience required
  • Level II trauma experience required; Level I trauma experience preferred
  • Current BLS and ACLS certifications from the American Heart Association
  • Current PALS, NIHSS, CPI, and TNCC certifications
  • Strong emergency nursing assessment, prioritization, triage, and crisis-management skills
  • Ability to float within scope of practice and adapt to changing patient-care needs
  • At least 1 year of professional nursing experience is required; this role specifically requires 3 years of ED experience

Emergency Room Nurse Responsibilities

  • Provide safe, efficient, and compassionate emergency care to patients of all ages and acuity levels
  • Perform rapid nursing assessments, triage patients, identify changes in condition, and initiate appropriate interventions
  • Care for patients presenting with chest pain, stroke, sepsis, cardiac arrest, trauma, respiratory illness, respiratory arrest, behavioral health concerns, overdose, burns, and other emergency conditions
  • Manage ventilated patients, central lines, chest tubes, arterial lines, IV vasopressors, IV sedation, and emergency medications
  • Assist with airway management, intubation, procedural sedation, blood product administration, and resuscitation procedures
  • Recognize and respond to dysrhythmias, STEMI, neurologic emergencies, multisystem organ dysfunction, and other high-acuity conditions
  • Provide trauma nursing care, including care for orthopedic injuries, spinal cord injuries, traumatic brain injuries, penetrating injuries, and amputations
  • Use specialized emergency equipment such as rapid infusers, cardiac compression devices, trauma blood-warming equipment, and neonatal warming equipment
  • Document assessments, interventions, reassessments, and outcomes accurately in Epic
  • Collaborate with physicians, respiratory therapy, pharmacy, radiology, rapid response teams, IV services, and other interdisciplinary partners
  • Support a safe environment for patients experiencing agitation, psychiatric emergencies, or suicidal ideation while following appropriate safety protocols
