Description

Job Title: Mental Health Technician Profession: Mental Health Technician Specialty: Pediatric Psychiatric Unit Duration: 13 Weeks Shift: 7A-7P Hours per Shift: 12 Experience: Minimum of 1 year of inpatient psychiatric experience. License: CNA License Certifications: BLS, MOAB (will obtain on site) Must-Have: Experience working with adolescents and pediatric patients. Description: As soon as possible start needed. Interviews will be conducted, and then management will approve. This facility is a free-standing acute inpatient facility with all patients medically cleared. The unit consists of 50 beds for pediatric patients. Average patient census is around the expected daily admissions for adolescent and pediatric patients. The role primarily involves caring for patients aged 5-18, including those with various diagnoses. Common diagnoses include autism, self-harm, depression, suicidal ideation, anxiety, schizophrenia, bipolar disorder, oppositional defiant disorder, gender dysphoria, trauma, and anger management issues. Daytime staffing includes six psychiatric technicians, while nighttime staffing includes two. Key responsibilities include redirection and de-escalation, assistance with activities of daily living, and monitoring patients every 7.5 minutes. The technician may also act as a 1:1 sitter and participate in physical holds as needed, employing the least restrictive measures in each situation. Additional duties may include obtaining EKGs if required. Desired qualities include punctuality, a positive attitude, and flexibility. Support is available within the department from the Director of Nursing, Nurse Manager, and charge nurses. There is a contracted phlebotomist for lab draws, and a Nurse Practitioner is on site during the day and available for on-call support. Psychiatrists conduct daily rounds and are also available on-call overnight. Occupational therapy is provided seven days a week. Security is available on site; however, staff from various units respond to patient escalations. The electronic medical record system used is Cerner. Specific equipment includes seclusion rooms and chair restraints. Staff may occasionally float to the adult unit if necessary. Weekend rotation is required every other weekend, with holiday work expected as part of the schedule. Shift times are from 0700-1900 and 1900-0700, with a modified self-scheduling system in place. Travelers will sign up for preferred shifts, and management will ensure all shifts are covered. If staff do not sign up during the designated time, they will be automatically assigned to vacant shifts. Uniforms should consist of any solid color professional scrubs. The unit culture values open communication and teamwork among staff members.
