Job Duties

VMI is accepting applications for full-time Trades Technicians on the Maintenance Team in the Physical Plant Department.

Responsibilities include:

• A multi-trade maintenance position with responsibilities across electrical, plumbing, carpentry, building maintenance, emergency response to include snow and ice removal, and general facilities support.
• Perform and/or assist with the installation, maintenance, repair, and testing of electrical conduit, wiring, panels, motors, outlets, switches, fixtures, and lighting systems, ensuring compliance with applicable electrical codes, safety regulations, and operational standards.
• Perform and/or assist with the installation, maintenance, and repair of water lines, circulating and pressure pumps, water fountains, water heaters, faucets, urinals, toilets, valves, and related plumbing systems to ensure safe and efficient operation.
• Assist with boiler maintenance and steam line repair.
• Participate in an on-call rotation every third week as part of a maintenance team, responding promptly to facility emergencies, weather-related incidents, and natural disasters while serving as designated essential personnel.
• Work weekends, evenings, and other non-standard hours as needed to support institute events, facility operations, emergency responses, and critical maintenance activities.
• Maintain a professional, courteous, and customer-focused demeanor while interacting with coworkers, campus personnel, and the public, and uphold established standards for Physical Plant appearance, conduct, and workplace professionalism.
• Maintain compliance with workplace safety standards by attending required safety training, properly handling hazardous materials, and consistently using appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE) and safety equipment while performing maintenance and repair duties.
• Perform other duties as assigned.

Minimum Qualifications

• Good communication skills
• Problem solving skills
• Adaptability
• Valid Virginia driver’s license with clean driving record required
• Successful candidate must have experience and general knowledge in plumbing, electrical and carpentry work.
• Ability to work from heights and operate a power lift
• Computer skills – iPad and work order system
