ABOUT THE ORGANIZATION:
Our client is seeking a dedicated and experienced Requirements Engineer to support the end-to-end mission requirements definition, tracking, and validation for a complex portfolio of approximately 20 concurrent space missions.
The Requirements Engineer will work directly with Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) stakeholders and engineering teams to translate high-level operational objectives into detailed, verifiable technical requirements across the mission lifecycle.
This position will play a key role in maintaining requirements traceability, coordinating mission dependencies, supporting validation activities, and ensuring engineering execution remains aligned with mission objectives and success criteria.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS and RESPONSIBILITIES:

• Owns the system specification: starts from approximately 20 mission-defining requirements and works with the team to decompose that single document into the derived specs needed to build and to buy
• Deep experience in requirements generation, traceability, and verification
• Hands-on requirements author who can actually write and work requirements, not just administer the requirements tool
• Ideal background is an engineer who rose into systems engineering from another technical discipline (i.e. electrical, mechanical, aerospace, etc.)
• Provides specific input to the software components of a system design, including hardware/software trade-offs, software reuse, use of COTS/GOTS in place of new development, and requirements analysis and synthesis from system level to individual software components
• Develops, maintains, and enhances complex and diverse software systems based upon documented requirements
• Develops software control of robotic systems leveraging real-time sensing and actuating interfaces, and hardware and application-specific boot code for baseline services and loading OS and application code into execution memory
• Evaluates and applies advanced mathematical methods and algorithms that meet control and performance requirements
• Designs, implements, and integrates software applications using methodologies appropriate to the development, integration, and production environment
• Mitigates risk, controls cost and schedule variance, and manages large-scale integrated software projects
• Reviews and tests software components for adherence to design requirements and documents test results

 
Required Qualifications:

• Bachelor's degree in Engineering, Systems Engineering, Computer Science, or a related technical field
• Demonstrated experience in requirements engineering, systems engineering, or requirements management
• Experience developing and managing technical requirements for complex programs
• Strong understanding of systems engineering principles and the systems development lifecycle
• Ability to translate operational objectives into measurable technical requirements
• Experience with requirements traceability, validation, and change management
• Strong analytical, organizational, and problem-solving skills
• Excellent written and verbal communication skills
• Ability to collaborate effectively with government stakeholders and multidisciplinary engineering teams
• Experience supporting aerospace, space, defense, or government programs preferred
• Experience working with Naval Research Laboratory (NRL) or similar government organizations preferred
• Final DoD-granted SECRET security clearance required
• Ability to work with sensitive and classified program information

Ideal Candidate:
The ideal candidate will have strong requirements engineering and systems engineering experience supporting complex aerospace, space, or defense programs. The candidate should be comfortable working directly with government stakeholders, translating mission objectives into technical requirements, managing traceability, and coordinating dependencies across multiple concurrent missions.
Experience with space missions or other highly complex government engineering programs is highly desirable. Candidates must possess a final DoD-granted SECRET security clearance.
