About Department 322 Quality Assurance
Quality Assurance Engineering is responsible for resolving complex technical problems impacting Electric Boat's compliance with the exacting standards required for construction, test, delivery, and sustainment of the world's premier classes of submarine. Additionally, QA Engineering is responsible for supporting critical and high visibility ship certifications that act as the cumulating act prior to the most severe testing that the product will receive prior to delivery to the Navy.
About the Role
Quality Assurance Engineers (QAEs) specialize in improving processes and systems to ensure quality and efficiency within Electric Boat. As the company continues execution on the Columbia and Virginia programs, members of this team are key contributors to their success. This position requires frequent cross-functional collaboration with internal and external customers to ensure delivery of a quality product and reports to a Quality Assurance Engineering Supervisor in Groton, CT.
QA Engineers lead investigations into quality deficiencies and assist functional areas in resolving issues that may occur at any Electric Boat site, Newport News Shipbuilding (NNS), or Supplier. Emergent issues may originate from any discipline, trade, or supplier, requiring the ability to learn and adapt quickly.
Responsibilities will include assessing product and process performance to identify quality defects; maintaining knowledge of Quality Specification to ensure products and processes align with compliance requirements; applying casual analysis tools; implementing and maintain systems that ensure adherence to quality standards; and partner with various teams to drive continuous improvement and prevent recurrence of quality issues.
Key Responsibilities
Perform pressure Hull Frame Dimension and Hull Fairness Measurement Evaluations
Develop and monitor quality metrics to improve 1st time quality at Electric Boat
Participate in significant issue problem resolution teams including causal analysis and implementation of preventive actions where required
Monitor, assign, status, and provide resolution support for all Customer Corrective Action Requests
Administer the QIM (Quality Item Matrix) administration and act as a liaison to teaming partner NNS for resolution of construction issues between shipyards, including causal analysis and preventive actions where required
Administer Quality commitment administration – load and manage commitments as required to support resolution of quality issues
Participate in Special Emphasis Program (SUBSAFE/DSS-SOC/FBW SCS) working groups within Electric Boat and jointly with NNS
Support all quality audits (e.g., certification audits, NDT audits, NAVSEA 08 audits, etc.)
