Our mission: eliminating every barrier to mental health.

Spring Health is a global mental health company on a mission to eliminate every barrier to mental health. We're building a world where getting support is simple, personal, and built around the person, so care can continue through every job, move, health plan, and life stage.

Our AI-native platform helps us deliver personalized support across self-guided tools, coaching, therapy, medication management, and specialty care. With outcomes independently validated by JAMA Network Open and the Validation Institute, Spring Health reaches more than 170 million people worldwide through leading employers, health plans, and partners.

As an AI-native company, we believe technology should expand the reach, quality, and humanity of care. Every Spring Health team member is expected to use AI tools thoughtfully, apply human judgment to AI outputs, and keep building AI fluency in ways that support their role and our mission.

The mission of the AI Interaction Designer is to create an empathetic, clinically valid, and effortless AI experience for our end-users. This includes shaping the language, tone, behavior, and interaction flows for our user-facing AI agents to drive meaningful behavior change and internal motivation.

Reporting to our Senior Manager, Product Design, you will be part of the Design Systems team, and partner closely with clinical and engineering teams to execute our AI product roadmap through exceptional writing, best-in-class conversation design, thoughtful AI interaction patterns, rigorous evaluation, and continuous iteration.

This is a highly writing-focused design role. You should be as passionate about finding the right words for an AI response as you are about designing the experience around it.

Please note that this is a hybrid role based in New York City, with an expectation to be in the office 2–3 days per week at our 60 Madison Avenue location. Candidates must be based in the NYC metro area or able to relocate independently within 90 days of their start date. Occasional travel will be required for team on-sites.

What you'll do:

  • Design end-to-end human-AI interactions across web and mobile, considering what the AI says, how it behaves, and how the broader product experience supports the conversation.
  • Write, test, and continuously refine exceptional conversational copy and AI prompts. You will craft language that makes members in moments of distress feel seen, heard, and important without ever minimizing or dismissing their experience.
  • Partner deeply with Clinical and Product teams to ensure AI interactions drive clinically valid behavior change, focusing on internal motivation.
  • Define conversational parameters and graceful error handling for edge cases, hallucinations, or ambiguous user intent.
  • Collaborate with engineers to implement prompt versioning and evaluate conversational quality using testing frameworks.
  • Act as a strategic design leader, regularly presenting conversational architecture, AI performance insights, and product vision to executives and extended leadership teams.

What success looks like:

  • Members consistently experience AI interactions as helpful, empathetic, clear, natural, and trustworthy.
  • Establish a distinctive and scalable tone and writing system for Spring Health's AI experiences.
  • Improve AI interaction resolution rates and reduce unnecessary human fallback through better conversational design.
  • Maintain exceptionally high member satisfaction with AI-driven conversational experiences.
  • Reduce off-brand, unhelpful, repetitive, or inappropriate AI responses through thoughtful writing, testing, and evaluation

What you'll bring:

  • Exceptional writing and editing skills, with a strong instinct for voice, tone, clarity, emotional nuance, and the ability to make complex ideas feel simple and human.
  • Experience in Conversation Design, Content Design, UX Writing, Copywriting, or a related discipline, with a portfolio demonstrating exceptional language and interaction craft.
  • Top-notch communication and executive presence. You excel at cross-functional collaboration and can articulate complex AI and design concepts clearly to organizational leadership.
  • Deep intellectual curiosity and a drive to tinker. You don't treat AI as a novelty—you actively use it as a collaborator to think better and accelerate your own workflows.
  • Strong cross-functional collaboration skills, particularly with engineering and clinical experts.

Nice to have:

  • Strong portfolio demonstrating complex human-AI interaction design, underlying logic, and user flows.
  • Deep understanding of LLM capabilities and constraints (e.g., context windows, streaming).
  • Familiarity with prompt engineering and testing methodologies.
  • A passion for incorporating user insights into evals and other metrics to improve conversational quality.
  • Experience integrating AI patterns into existing design systems (e.g., Figma).
  • Experience integrating AI UX eval methods into spec-driven agentic workflows.
  • Experience in the benefits or mental health space.
