Location: Remote | Contract through January (likely extension) | Walmart IoT Team
About the Role
Join Walmart's high-impact IoT team as a Senior Systems Engineer, where you will drive the administration and automation of cutting-edge Azure IoT Edge environments at enterprise scale. You'll operate across a fleet of 11,000+ Linux-based virtual machines, ensuring seamless edge computing for one of the world's largest retailers. This is a hands-on opportunity to lead in observability, automation, and production support, collaborating with top-tier engineering teams in a fast-paced, fully remote environment.
Responsibilities
- Administer, automate, and troubleshoot Azure IoT Edge devices and modules, including provisioning, patching, upgrades, and runtime management
- Plan quarterly upgrade cycles and execute IoT Edge runtime maintenance with minimal operational disruption
- Perform advanced (L3) Linux/RHEL system administration: user/access management, kernel troubleshooting, performance tuning, and root-cause analysis
- Operate and enhance observability stacks: OpenObserve (logs), Prometheus/Grafana (metrics/dashboards) across edge and cloud systems
- Manage disaster recovery execution, including DR drills and failover/failback between on-prem and cloud infrastructure
- Build and maintain CI/CD pipelines for infrastructure and application deployment
- Develop and maintain automation scripts/playbooks (Ansible, shell, Python) to streamline operations
- Respond to alerts, troubleshoot incidents, escalate per runbooks, and keep documentation current
- Collaborate cross-functionally with security, networking, and application teams
Required Skills and Experience
- 10+ years in Unix/Linux system administration, with proven L3-level troubleshooting and operational excellence in production environments
- Deep hands-on experience with Azure IoT Edge (edgeAgent, edgeHub) device/module management at scale
- Advanced Linux/RHEL administration: kernel, filesystem, storage, networking, performance, security, user management
- Strong scripting and automation skills (shell, Python, Ansible/Puppet/Chef)
- Expertise in container operations (Docker) on Linux and edge devices
- Production experience with OpenObserve (log aggregation, dashboards), Prometheus, and Grafana (metrics/alerts)
- CI/CD pipeline management (build, deploy, troubleshooting) in enterprise environments
- Understanding of the IoT device lifecycle: provisioning, management, updates, decommissioning
Preferred Skills
- Legacy monitoring migration (Nagios to modern stacks)
- Experience with MQTT brokers in IoT environments
- NGINX administration and tuning
- Certificate lifecycle management
- Familiarity with edge computing constraints (resource limits, intermittent connectivity)
- Incident escalation and runbook adherence
- Experience collaborating across functional teams
Benefits
- Fully remote position with flexible work arrangements
- Opportunity for contract extension and potential long-term engagement
- Work with leading-edge IoT and observability technologies at enterprise scale
- Collaborate with world-class engineers in a dynamic, innovative environment
- Enhance your expertise in cloud, automation, and distributed systems
