Definition

Under general direction, is responsible for supervising employees and participating in the care and maintenance of sports fields and facilities; performs related duties as required.

Examples of Work

  • Constructs and maintains athletic fields by measuring, laying out, and clearly marking the boundaries and playing surfaces of a variety of athletic fields according to regulations and accepted standards, such as football, baseball, softball, soccer, field hockey, rugby, and lacrosse;

  • Lays down and maintains playing surfaces, such as filling holes and dragging clay on softball fields, adding fill to artificial turf, removing water from field, or grading a field during off season;

  • Organizes alternate plans with league contacts when field conditions make changes to anticipated schedule necessary; serves as on-site contact for athletic field issues during league play;

  • Oversees and participates in making repairs of buildings, benches, and other fixtures at or near athletics fields, such as bleachers, concession stands, and announcers' and scorekeepers' booth;

  • Determines the manner in which maintenance tasks are to be completed; schedules and assigns work activities;

  • Identifies various turf diseases and performs and directs pesticide and chemical applications where applicable;

  • Trains subordinates in the safe and appropriate methods for the care and maintenance of athletics fields;

  • Supervises employees to include signing leave slips and timesheets, conducting performance appraisals, and recommending discipline;

  • Recommends maintenance staffing needs for department sports fields;

  • Requisitions and issues tools, equipment, and supplies to maintenance employees; establishes and implements an equipment maintenance and repair schedule;

  • Oversees and participates in the mowing, watering, and fertilizing of turf grass as needed;

  • Makes budgetary recommendations as it relates to the maintenance of sports fields; ensures expenditures remain within budget limits; maintains records and prepares reports.

Minimum Qualifications

Possession of an associate degree which includes significant coursework (thirty (30) semester or forty-five (45) quarter hour credits) in turf grass science, sports field maintenance, sport and exercise studies, or a closely related field and two (2) years of experience leading or supervising the construction or maintenance of regulation athletics fields. Substitution: Additional experience in the construction or maintenance of regulation athletics fields may substitute for the education on a year-for-year basis.

Possession of a valid Commercial Applicator License (Turf Pests category) and (Industrial Vegetation category) issued by the Ohio Department of Agriculture by completion of the probationary period.

Possession of a valid driver's license.

Test/Job Contact Information

The names of the applicants passing this administration of this exam will be used to create a NEW, OPEN COMPETITIVE, eligible list, and will replace the names on the current list. If you are interested in having your name included on the new eligible list, you will need to apply for this exam within the filing period and successfully complete all phases of the testing process. The examination process will consist of a computerized exam weighted 100% covering Supervision, Problem Sensitivity, Turf/Soil Care and Safety, Sports Field Preparation and Set-Up, and 2019/2021 Outlook, Word, and Excel.

The exam is expected to be administered in October 2026. Approved applicants will be notified by mail/email of their scheduled test date and time.

All applicants must complete all phases of the testing process in order to receive a final score. The names of all candidates who pass this examination will remain on the eligible list for two years, unless the eligible list is replaced prior to or extended beyond the two years. If a candidates name is certified and the candidate is to be considered for employment, the hiring process will include one or more interviews, a criminal background check, and a pre-employment drug test.
